Round 5

Saxlingham provided a master class in run gathering as they scampered their way to the highest score of the tournament so far. Despite their opponents, Norfolk Girls, much improved performance with the ball, Saxlingham’s decisive calling and lack of hesitation netted them copious threes under the new system of one off the wall and two for a single. All three pairs contributed to the large total netting 29, 26 and with the power play taken in the last two overs, 45 respectively to finish on 200.

After a disastrous start in which they lost 8 wickets in the first four overs the Girls were always playing catch-up. But with Saxlingham’s tail up and a cohesive performance in the field this was too big an ask as their innings ended on 95.

Saxlingham 220 for 4 (net 200) – 54 points. Norfolk Girls 155 for 12 (net 95) – 8 points.

In the second match Rocklands made heavy weather with the bat as they spluttered their way to 118 at the end of the eighth over, bogged down by tight bowling and fielding from Mulbarton. It was only the last four overs, helped by the power play, that gave the innings any real impetus as they added a further 38 runs to post a respectable and defendable 154.

Mulbarton seemed to feel that this total was well within their reach as they demonstrated little urgency at the beginning of their reply. But with 25 still needed off the last four overs, albeit including one of power play, they had rather piled unnecessary pressure on themselves as Rocklands turned the screw. The last over saw Mulbarton still 11 light of the target but, despite their best efforts, they managed only 8 leaving Rocklands worthy winners of this exciting game by two runs.

Rocklands 174 for 4 (net 154) – 32 points. Mulbarton 182 for 6 (net 152) – 18 points.

Round 4

An outstanding bowling and fielding performance by Mulbarton including several superb catches ought to have been enough to consign Gt.Ellingham to their first defeat of the competition.

Gt.Ellingham never really recovered from their power play in the third and fourth overs that cost them six wickets for 24 runs and after this struggled to find any gaps as Mulbarton pinned them down.

Mulbarton should easily have chased down the low total of 107 but some inappropriate shot selection combined with Ellingham’s tenacious approach held them back whenever they looked like moving ahead. They too were unable to make the most of their power play overs managing just fourteen runs for the loss of two wickets.

One run ahead at the start of the final over, Mulbarton lost a wicket off the fourth ball and with four needed off the final delivery scored only two to give Gt.Ellingham their second win by the margin of a single run.

The second game was not so close run with Saxlingham struggling against a cohesive Melton attack that never let them settle. Like Mulbarton, they too were guilty of some rash stroke play and paid the price with the regular loss of wickets. Their power play too was disappointing and, taken in the last two overs, saw them lose four wickets for ten runs.

By the end of the first pair, Melton were already thirty runs ahead and there were to be no surprises as they built steadily on this platform, adding another 73 runs, including 34 off their two power play overs, to round off the evening with a convincing victory by 93 runs.

The results leave Mulbarton clinging to top spot by two points from Gt.Melton.

Round 3 Results

Wickets tumbled in the third round of the zipleague. There was plenty of lusty hitting from Saxlingham in their innings of 166 against Mulbarton, but with too many balls in the air they paid the price losing fourteen wickets - and it could have been a lot more.

With their impressive 166 off the bat reduced to just 96 net, Mulbarton were never under any real pressure and scored 162 for three wickets (147) to comfortably win the game by 51 runs.

In the second game, Melton batted confidently against an energetic Rocklands attack scoring 160 for 3 (145) before frustrating their opponents as they dashed for runs. Good bowling and tight fielding, assisted by some suicidal running contributed to the eleven wickets and meant that the result was never in any doubt as Melton eased home by 47 runs.

Rule Changes from December 19th

In response to feedback from managers there are a few rule changes proposed for the competition in this trial year.

One of these has already been adopted; the award of one run whenever the ball hits the wall behind the striker, whether it has hit the bat or not. Wide or no balls striking the rear wall will continue to be awarded two runs only. In all cases the bal
l will be considered dead the moment it makes contact with the rear wall and the batsmen may not run a single.

In other proposed changes the ball striking a side wall will score one run automatically in addition to any other score made after that delivery, and the running of a single, currently scoring only one run, will now count as two.

To ratchet up the excitement even further, a power play of two overs (which need not be consecutive) is to be introduced in each innings, this to be chosen by the batting side. During the power play all runs will count double (including extras, boundaries etc.) and for the bowling side all wickets will count double too.

The batting side must inform the umpires and bowling side of their nominated power play overs before the innings starts.

These changes will be introduced on December 19th when all teams have completed two games.

Round 2 - Ellingham win again

Rocklands got their campaign underway with a very respectable 155 for 3 (140) before their opponents, Saxlingham, matched them with the bat but lost nine wickets in the process, losing the first game by 24 runs.

Norfolk Select Girls made a much better effort with the bat in the second match with some assured stroke play and running taking them to 155 for 2 (145).

But they were unable to put pressure on Ellingham's chase when several of their bowlers developed an alarming case of the yips and were unable to control their line, gifting their opponents a succession of extras. Gt.Ellingham finished the match on 179 for 1 (174).

Exciting start to new competition

There was an excellent turnout of spectators and supporters for the first two games of the zipleague indoor tournament.

Gt.Ellingham and Gt.Melton were first on court and Melton, batting first, were uncharacteristically restrained against some cohesive Ellingham fielding and bowling, losing six wickets, and finishing on a net 132.

With no benchmark previous scores was this good enough? Ellingham were soon in trouble and half way through the innings it seemed Melton would easily defend this modest total gathering wickets whenever their opponents threatened the target. But a late flurry of extras and a six catapulted Ellingham clear and they batted out the remaining over to secure victory by one run.

Next up Mulbarton had one of those nights when everything goes right and despite an excellent bowling and fielding effort, largely unrewarded, from the Norfolk Select Girls, Mulbarton could do nothing wrong racking up a formidable total of 181 for the loss of just two wickets.

The indoor game requires a different style of play and Mulbarton had learned well from their trial match a few weeks ago. The others will also learn quickly but on this night the girls’ luck was out as everything went Mulbarton’s way.

This was fantastic start to the competition - many thanks to all who attended giving the evening something of a party atmosphere. Feedback is always welcome from players, parents, spectators or coaches. Please send any comments by clicking here.

End of season roundup
Thirty eight teams played in the four leagues with games from May until September in the competition's fifth season underlining the health of the youth game in the county and the popularity cricket still enjoys in the summer sporting calendar.

In the U11 league, last year’s title holders Gt.Melton were the team to match and despite strong challenges from runners up Rocklands Rustlers, the only team to beat them, and third placed Mulbarton, their strength and consistency enabled them to retain the trophy by a margin of 22 points.

There were plenty of outstanding performances at this age group including a half century for Ryan Ellis (59no) of Topcroft and a four wicket haul for Ryan Howard (4-2) of Gt.Melton being the best of the season.  Ten other players also bagged three wickets including Emma Rogers (3-8) of Garboldisham.

Apart from the inaugural year of the U13 competition in 2008, won by Gt.Ellingham, Garboldisham have dominated this league and were looking to secure a hat trick of wins against some tough opposition. Both Mulbarton and Gt.Melton looked potential challengers but the reliability and cohesion of the Garboldisham squad saw both these off and, without losing a game in their campaign, secured the trophy for another year.

Matthew Branfield (87no) of Garboldisham and Joeseph Wilson (80) of Tas Valley were the leading scorers at U13 while Liam Rogers (4 for 5), also of Garboldisham, recorded top performance with the ball.

With the same name again on both the U11 and U13 trophies it was Gt.Melton who were defending the U15 title and looking for their third consecutive win. Tas Valley and Garboldisham were the principal contenders here, the latter, winners in 2007 and 2008 looking to reclaim the cup from the holders. A big win in their final game of the season against Tas Valley confirmed Garboldisham as the U15 champions without losing a match.

Having already retained the U13 trophy for the third consecutive year, the capture of the U15 title from holders Gt.Melton underlined the extraordinary success the club has achieved at youth level in recent years.

At U15 Joel Howard of Tas Valley became the first player in the league to hit two centuries, with 100 this season joining his 111 in 2009. Two Rocklands’ players shone with the ball; Craig Ellis’ 5-0 being the best figures ever and T.Bart’s 4 for 1 another excellent performance.  In all the leagues, 48 batsmen made scores of 50+ and 28 bagged 3 wickets or more.

Garboldisham have won all four leagues at some time in the competition’s short history and this season were the only club to beat holders Hardingham at U17 level, winning by 6 wickets in the only game the club have lost at this age group in the last three years. This extraordinary consistency allowed Hardingham to convincingly retain the U17 trophy by a record margin.

For the U17s, Jack Grant of Mattishall and Ben Spinks of Diss both scored centuries with Jordi Lake (4-1) of Gt.Ellingham producing the best bowling  performance.

September 10th 2011

U11 Tas Valley v Garboldisham
The Garboldisham total of 81 for 3 was built around solid scores of 24 from Oscar Rushden and 23 not out from Toby, with Oliver South being the best of the Tas bowlers with 2 for 8.

In reply a relatively young and inexperienced Tas side finished on 57 for 4 with Louis Simmons being the top scorer with 22.

U15 League - Garboldisham cross the line.
A big win in their final game of the season against Tas Valley confirmed Garboldisham as the U15 champions for 2011. Having already retained the U13 trophy for the third consecutive year, the capture of the U15 title from holders Gt.Melton underlines the extraordinary success the club has achieved at youth level in recent years.

They have yet to lose a game this season in either the U13 or U15 leagues, although Rocklands ran them closest losing out by only 3 runs in their U15 encounter.

Garboldisham topped the U15 table in 2007, the inaugural summer, and then again in 2008 with Hardingham runners up in both years before Melton wrested the cup from them in 2009 and 2010 with Garboldisham and Gt.Ellingham placed second respectively.

September 4th 2011

U11 Gt.Melton v Saxlingham
Saxlingham only had 6 players at the start of the game and, by the time a 7th man arrived, they had been bowled out for just 21 in 4.3 overs.  Only Smith, with 4 not out, scored any runs with the bat. The other 17 came from extras as Melton Captain Ryan Howard took 4-2 in 1.3 overs and his twin brother Jordan 1-2 in one over.

Ryan Howard (14 not out) and Fergus Hughes (8 not out) then knocked off the runs in 3 overs to give Melton the maximum 16 points and secure the Under 11s championship.

September 4th 2011

U15 Tas Valley v Garboldisham
Batting first 45 extras did not help the Tas cause as champions elect Garboldisham scored 131 for 5 with D Taylor 21, D Palmer 22 and J Duncanson 25 contributing the bulk of the runs from the bat.

The Garboldisham bowlers then tore into the Tas batting and having dispatched the Tas openers Howard and Adams in the first 2 overs Garboldisham never let up and bowled Tas out for 34 to prove themselves worthy under 15 champions.

September 4th 2011

U15 Thetford v Tas Valley
A century opening partnership by Joel Howard 90 and Max Adams 54 saw Tas Valley to a score of 186  for 4. Although most of the Thetford bowlers proved expensive R Miller was the exception with 2 for 12.

In reply Max Malanson with 41 was the mainstay of the Thetford batting and with support from J Lang 15, and 25 extras saw Thetford to 96 for 5.

September 4th 2011

U13 Tas Valley v Thetford
In scoring 82 for 6 Tas Valley were reliant on a polished 45 not out from Joeseph Wilson and 28 extras. For Thetford W Gray with 2 for 5 off 3 overs bowled well and was well supported by R Miller with 2 for 12 and J Lang 2 for 13.

In reply Max Malenson also produced a polished innings of 45 not out and was well supported by Zac Lewis who made 27 as Thetford recorded a well deserved 6 wicket victory.

September 4th 2011

U15 Gt.Melton v Gt.Ellingham
A 2nd wicket partnership of 101 between Joe Bush (39) and skipper Michael Farmer (42) enabled Great Melton to score an impressive 126-4 in their final match of the season against Great Ellingham.

Stuart Wilson then took 2-6, Joe Bickel 2-13 and Scott Lyle 1-10 as 7-man Ellingham were bowled out for 77.

It was a good toss for Melton to win as the murky late-season conditions meant that Ellingham were having to bat in very poor light.  Despite this Thompson impressed, scoring 29 and Lake hit 15.

Correction - U15 League
The League rather jumped the gun in confirming Garboldisham as U15 champions for 2011.

Hethersett and Tas Valley, still with two games to play, are only 28 points adrift and big wins could still see them overhaul Garboldisham's total.

Our apologies.

August 30th 2011

U13 League - It's Garboldisham again
Garboldisham will be celebrating a hat trick of titles in the U13 League as their win over second placed Mulbarton and Melton's narrow victory over Rocklands removed the last two obstacles to retaining the trophy.

Still with a game to play against Thetford, they could extend their winning margin to eighteen points over second placed Mulbarton and third Gt.Melton.

Gt.Ellingham won the inaugural title in 2008, edging out Garboldisham by nine points but since then it's been Garby all the way with a three point margin over Hethersett & Tas Valley in 2009 and their largest victory by twenty eight points last season over Cringleford Lodge.

With Hardingham already having retained their U17 title and Melton looking set for the U11 plate it could be same again all round with only the destination of the U15 trophy still to be decided.

August 27th 2011

U17 Mattishall v Garboldisham
Mattishall batted first and clocked up 124 all out in the final over. Top scorer was J Mustard on 40 who proved difficult to shift until Garboldisham's U13 Oscar Seaman had him caught off his first ball.

In reply Garby chased down the score with just four balls to spare in an exciting finish with Ben Asker picking up 36, Joe Seaman 26 and Joe Paul 22.

August 27th 2011

U17 League - Hardingham retain title
With Thetford withdrawing from the competition and Diss forfeiting their game against the league leaders, Hardingham secured their second consecutive title with a total of of 98 points.

Beaten only by Garboldisham, inaugural winners of the title in 2009 and the only team ever to beat them in the three years of the competition, their five wins was more than enough to carry them clear.

The League offers its congratulations and  thanks them for their generous hospitality towards visiting teams, always greatly enjoyed by the boys.

August 26th 2011

U17 Mulbarton v Gt.Ellingham
J.Clarke (29) and M.Thompson (40no) were the biggest contributors to Ellingham’s 117 for 4 in a one sided encounter at Orchard Park. Only Bradley (2-7) bowled with any real consistency as the visitors, helped by 28 extras, accelerated in the second half of the innings adding 72 off the last eight overs.

A target of 117 was not out of sight but with Button caught first ball and skipper George (18) clean bowled in the fourth over,  Mulbarton collapsed losing the rest of their wickets for fourteen runs before the end of the ninth over.

All of the visitors had a bowl with Horcross (2 for 6) taking wickets off consecutive balls in his only over.

U13 Rocklands v Gt.Melton
Melton U13s completed a successful season with a 9-run victory in a closely-contested match at Rocklands.  With players in short supply, both managers agreed to allow their County players one final opportunity of some competitive action and Melton’s Joey Greenslade and Rocklands’ Matt Minors showed their class with half-centuries.  Greenslade scored 53 before retiring and Rob Smith hit 18 to help Melton to a 16-over total of 93-2.  Remarkably Rocklands only bowled 2 wides with Minors conceding just 4 runs in his 3 overs before opening the batting.

With a six and 8 fours, he kept Rocklands up with the required rate, receiving good support from E.Proctor (12) but Melton’s final 3 bowlers, Smith, Ben Carding and Luke Marchant maintained a good line and length to restrict Minors’ big shots.  When Marchant had Minors well caught on the mid-wicket boundary by Sam Carding for 51, Rocklands still needed 10 runs from 4 balls.  Next ball Brown was caught by Marcus Mawby as Marchant, bowling at the death,  returned impressive figures of 3-0-12-2.  Rocklands fell short, finishing on 84-6.  Smith also took 2-12 from his 3 overs.

Alan Miners of Rocklands wrote "Very exciting game played in good spirit. Excellent batting by Joe Greenslade (53 not out ) gave Gt Melton a very good total on a flat wicket. Some big hitting by Matt Miners ( 51 ) gave Rocklands a chance of chasing the total down. With 16 runs  required of the last over Miners was very well caught on the boundary and the run chase was over  ( 9 runs short). Rocklands battled hard but came up a little short. Well played Gt Melton deserved winners."

U13 Mulbarton v Garboldisham
In a top of the table clash that would almost certainly decide the destination of the 2011 trophy, Mulbarton entertained Garboldisham in their final match of the season.

Winning the toss and batting first Garboldisham lost the dangerous Branfield first ball to a scudder from Toms but after this Rogers (51no) and Young (17) put together a partnership of 65 before Statham removed Young with his first delivery. He should have had a second wicket too but Oscar, dropped off his first ball, went on to make 28no.

Mulbarton struggled with their line and length throughout the innings and the ground fielding, with a few exceptions, was generally poor allowing the visitors to gather a larger total than might otherwise have been possible, finishing on 123 for 2.

With Mathews (5), Toms (3) and Lynds (3) all sent packing by the end of the fifth over with less than 20 on the board, an embarrassing rout looked possible but an excellent partnership between Bainbridge (18) and the gutsy Marshall (39no) added 50 before Bainbridge perished trying to hit over the top. Mulbarton did well in the end to post 95 but Garboldisham bowled and fielded with more tenacity than the home side, taking some excellent catches including a blinder from Branfield to dismiss Arthurs (2). They thoroughly deserved their victory which almost certainly secures them a third consecutive title.

U11 Cringleford Lodge v Gt.Melton
Great Melton moved a step nearer to retaining the U11 title with a narrow victory over Cringleford, Connor Jermyn hitting the winning run with 5 balls to spare.  Melton restricted their hosts to 57-5 with skipper Ryan Howard taking 2-10 and Patrick Walton 1-10 with two run outs by Jermyn and Josh Moore.  It looked like being a lot less than 57 until Cringleford’s 6th wicket pair, Alfie Bowles (10 not out) and J.Sharred (11 not out) came together.

After Walton (4)  and Aimee Palmer (0) were dismissed cheaply, Melton’s reply featured a good partnership between Howard (14) and Logan Stearman (13).  There were a few jitters when both were out in quick succession but sensible batting by Jermyn (3 not out) and George Steward (3 not out) saw Melton to victory in the 16th over.  Cringleford bowled and fielded well with A.Bowles, B.Bowles, Sharred and Lister all picking up wickets.

Melton are now 11 points clear of Rocklands Rustlers at the top of the table with one game each remaining.  7 points in their remaining match at Saxlingham on Sunday week will secure the title.

U15 Belton v Hardingham
In their last U15 game of the season, Hardingham travelled to Belton for an enjoyable game played in the right spirit where the outcome was in the balance right up to the last over.

Hardingham won the toss and decided to bat and after losing an early wicket J.Harris (52no) and M.Lee batted beautifully putting on 104 without being parted.

In response S.Bracewell (24) and A.Bray (33) batted with real purpose and it was not until the last over when S.Hastings took two wickets that victory was assured for Hardingham.

U15 Hardingham v Rocklands

Craig Ellis of Rocklands Rockets In an extraordinary game at Hardingham the home side were bowled out for 14, all of the runs coming from extras, with Craig Ellis returning the league's all time best figures of 5 for 0.

Rocklands quickly gathered the required runs for the loss of just one wicket before the game finished at 6.20, the whole match lasting just 37 balls.

Hardingham's 14 equals the lowest ever score set by an U15 team matching that of Hethersett Youth back in 2007 in their game against Mulbarton.

U17 League - Thetford announce withdrawal
Youth manager Andy Gray announced with regret that Thetford are unable to complete their league programme.

He said "After a lengthy discussion with Steve Conroy (U17 Manager), we have decided to pull out our U17 team from the league...we have 6 games to play in 3 weeks and its just not possible.  Steve was working with a limited number of players and when holiday time hit and the football pre season kicked in, he was left with 2 or 3 players."

Teams still with unplayed fixtures v Thetford will be awarded average points to their total at the end of the season in accordance with League rules.

August 17th 2011

U15 Thetford v Belton
A plucky effort by the visitors saw Thetford victorious by a very narrow margin. Chasing the 127 that Thetford made Belton fell short by 4 runs. The Thetford total including Melansons 2nd 50 of the season and his highest score so far of 84 n o. he was supported by his captain Daniel Greyson and under 11 recruit Tristan Caley.

Thetfords effort in the field can only be described as ragged with at least 4 catches going begging. A fine opening partnership of 100 plus between Savoury & Bracewell. This impressive partnership looked like it was going to bring them home until Will Gray finally got the reward of Savourys wicket (54) stumped by Melanson behind the stumps.

August 17th 2011

U15 Tas Valley v Hardingham
Hardingham batted first and with extras contributing 25 a hard hitting 52 from M Lee provided the bulk of the Hardingham total of 92 for 5. The Tas Valley bowling honours going to 12 years old Joeseph Wilson with 3 for 12 and Fraser Ellis with 2 for 15.

In reply although losing the early wicket of Max Adams, skipper Joel Howard with 58 not out and Olly Hutt with 16 not out saw Tas Valley home.

August 17th 2011

U17 Garboldisham v Hardingham
Hardingham started well enough at 8 runs an over but then proceeded to lose wickets at a regular pace and were all out in the final over for 108. Pick of the Garby bowlers was Ben Asker with two for 10.

Garboldisham chased down the Hardingham total in just 11 overs with Henry Phoenix (79no) and Lewis Taylor (23) finding boundaries with ease.

August 17th 2011

U11 Topcroft v Hethersett & Tas Valley
Topcroft hosted Hethersett & Tas Valley in an entertaining match. Topcroft batted first and posted 121 for 3. The innings was based around a fine innings from Ryan Ellis who scored 59 not out. After being dropped first ball, he attacked the boundary and along with Flo Allen, they upped the run rate very well towards the end of the innings.

This proved the difference as Tas Valley were always up with the rate but lacked the final flourish of runs that Topcroft had. 9 year old Jack Day took a tremendous caught and bowled for Topcroft's only wicket as the visitors finished on 94 for 1.

August 15th 2011

U15 Hardingham v Gt.Melton
Holidays made raising a team for the fixture at Hardingham quite difficult so manager Dave Bickel drafted in 3 of the U13s but Melton still proved too strong for the home side, winning by 54 runs.  In fact it was one of the U13s, Connor Stearman, who followed up his half-century the previous day against Topcroft U13s with a top score of 24 in the older age group.  He was well-supported by Craig Woolrich (22) and Scott Lyle (22) as Melton, helped by 32 extras, scored 112 all out.  The wickets were shared around with J.Harris (2-23) and J.Gaskin (2-25) getting two apiece with one each for F.Falcon (1-12), C.Lackstar (1-11) and D.Billman (1-15).

Lyle (2-0-15-1) struck early in the Hardingham reply, bowling Lee for nought and, once Craig Woolrich (2-0-7-2) had removed the dangerous Harris for 23, Melton were well on top.  Two wickets in successive balls for Stuart Wilson (3-0-13-2) put the game beyond Hardingham and Ben Carding (1.4-0-3-2) mopped up the tail in what was a clinical performance.  The home side were bowled out for 58 in 11.4 overs.

August 13th 2011

U17 Gt.Ellingham v Brooke
Jordi Lake stole the show with a match winning performance scoring 67no with the bat and a unbelievable 4 wickets for 1 run including a hat trick to finish the game.

Ellingham started brightly; Dan Thompson's quick fire 13 was followed up with some powerful stroke play from Chris Reeve (26) as the home side set a target of 139.

Ellingham's fielding was vastly improved from the previous match; D.Thompson taking a blinding catch and S.Garnham throwing down the stumps from 30 yards as the visitors were bowled out for 78.

This has not taken long as the answer is...one - so thank you Garboldisham for this single contribution.

If anything the response is even worse this summer than in previous seasons with not a single image of any likely trophy winners provided by their club.

U15 Tas Valley v Rocklands
In a very close and entertaining game Max Adams with a fine 52 not out supported by Joel Howard 25 and Olly Hutt 24 saw Tas Valley close on 119 for 4.

In reply from 43 for 4 some spirited batting from T Bart 32, B Webster 23 and C Barlow 19 not out saw Rocklands recover to 113 for 6, but found themselves with just too much to do as Tas Valley ran out winners by 6 runs. Although not a night for bowlers Rockland's T Bart produced the best figures of 2 for 19.

U11 Mulbarton v Gt.Melton
Melton’s all-conquering Under 11s held on to top spot with a 15-run victory over a sporting Mulbarton side.  An unbroken opening partnership of 74 between Fergus Hughes and Patrick Walton laid the foundation for victory with both boys combining some well-timed drives and pulls with some excellent running between the wickets.  Manager Paul Stearman retired both openers after 11 overs with Hughes on 34 and Walton on 19. Unfortunately Ben Bailey was then run out without facing a ball but that was Mulbarton’s only success as Aimee Palmer (8 not out) and Lewis Thurston (4 not out) saw Melton to 91-1 from their 16 overs.

Mulbarton’s first three batsmen all looked dangerous but Craig Wilson bowled Osborne (4) with his first ball, Connor Jermyn bowled D.Phillips for 9 then Ben Bailey produced a good piece of fielding to run out Polack for a good 18. Jermyn (2-0-10-2) took a second wicket thanks to a good catch by Hughes and Bailey bowled his namesake for 3. Palmer then bowled Garson to leave Mulbarton 56-6.  The last pair, Foster (4 not out) and Webster (1 not out) resisted stubbornly, though, and helped by ‘extras’ Mulbarton reached 76-6 after 16 overs.  It wasn’t Melton’s best fielding performance with several missed run-outs but there was some good bowling, particularly from Connor Jermyn,  Aimee Palmer (2-0-3-1), Fergus Hughes (3-0-9-0), Lewis Thurston(1-0-2-0) and Patrick Walton (2-0-8-0).  Craig Wilson (3-0-18-1) was a little more expensive than usual and Ben Bailey bowled a mixture excellent balls, including the one that got the wicket, and wides that contributed 15 to his figures of 3-0-20-1.

U15 Hardingham v Cringleford Lodge
Cringleford batted first and were indebted to their captain Malcolm who batted superbly well for his 46no. Hardingham's lads bowled and fielded very well only taking 2 wickets.

In response Hardingham lost early wickets due to some very good catching and a lucky run out. At 29 for 4 the game looked lost but a very entertaining stand between D.Billman(10) and T.Poole(18no) of 43 almost turned the tide in Hardingham's favour. But Billman got out at the crucial time and eventually Hardingham went down by 6 runs.

A wonderful match which had the spectators on the edge of there seats until the last ball was bowled; played in the right spirit and attitude of both clubs concerned. This is what this league is all about.

July 27th 2011

U11 Rocklands v Mulbarton
Mulbarton won the toss and put Rocklands into bat on a slow wicket. Runs off the bat were difficult to come by but after a steady start Matthew Noonan was bowled for 8 by Tom Osborne whose three overs cost just 6 runs. Matthew Hendrie remained resolute and the scoreboard ticked over steadily. Further steady bowling by George Polack, Nathan Sharpe and David Mathews ensured that the Rocklands batsmen did not get completely on top and restricted them to a competitive total of 77 for 2 wickets.

The Mulbarton reply started well until Matthew Hendrie trapped Matthews LBW but Tom Osborne was already looking comfortable and went on to score a fine 34 including a huge six over mid wicket before being bowled by Hendrie with just a few required. Rocklands bowled well to take the game to the last over and can be pleased with the accuracy of their bowling however Mulbarton pair Polack and George Garson scored the run required to take their team home. Matthew Hendrie was the pick of the bowlers with 2-8 but ably supported by all with Matt Noonan 1-15, Jared Crabtree 1-8 and Josh Walker 0-6 bowling particularly tidily. Liam Owen kept wicket well again for Rocklands as he has done all season. Another good game played in good spirit on both sides.

July 26th 2011

U11 Topcroft v Mulbarton
Topcroft won the toss and put Mulbarton in to bat. David Mathews and Tom Osborn opened the batting and put on 22 when David was out lbw for 7. Tom batted the whole innings and hit his second 6 in two matches and four 4's. for his top scoring 34 not out. A second wicket partnership with George Polack put on 55 runs, with George scoring 11, followed by supportive batting from Josh Bailey, George Garson and James Webster. Mulbarton set Topcroft a total of 109 for 4.

The Topcroft opening pair of Ashkin and Squire put on 76 before losing their first wicket off Josh Bailey's bowling, caught by David Mathews. Four wickets then fell in quick succession with Tom Osborn and David Mathews taking a wicket each. Once again it came down to the last over with Topcroft needing 8 runs to tie and Mulbarton needing 2 wickets to win. Topcroft scored 8 and there was a run out off the last ball, making it a tied match and a very close finish.

U11 Gt.Melton v Tas Valley
Great Melton included two girls in the Under 11s for the first time and both played significant roles in the 44-run defeat of Hethersett & Tas Valley.  Aimee Palmer top-scored with 13 and took 1-3 while Rebecca Russell, making her debut, scored 3 and took 1-2.  Melton scored a total of 67-6, Fergus Hughes (10) and Logan Stearman (11 not out) also making significant contributions.  E.Blofield bowled well for the visitors taking 3-6 and T.Worley (3-1-7-1) was equally impressive.

Melton also bowled and fielded impressively.  As well as Aimee and Rebecca there was a good opening spell from Craig Wilson and a wicket and a brilliant catch for Lewis Thurston (1-6) before skipper Hughes ended the game in the 9th over by taking 3 wickets as Tas Valley were bowled out for just 23.

July 25th 2011

U11 Gt.Melton v Topcroft
Craig Wilson took a hat-trick and Ryan Howard and Aimee Palmer figured in a match-winning half-century partnership as Melton Under 11s bounced back from their 7 wicket defeat at Rocklands to beat Topcroft by the same margin the very next evening.

Craig’s 3 wickets in successive balls - 2 bowled, 1 caught by Jake Bush – came towards the end of Topcroft’s innings and helped Melton restrict the visitors to 52-6.  J.Ashken scored 16 and R.Ellis 10 in the Topcroft total.  Aimee Palmer (3-0-11-1), Patrick Walton (1-0-5-1) and Ryan Howard (3-0-6-1) also took wickets but Fergus Hughes (3-0-8-0) and Lewis Thurston (2-1-2-0) bowled well too.

Skipper Howard then led by example, scoring a classy 31 not out, including a six and 3 fours.  He was well supported by Aimee’s 12 not out as Melton reached 53-0 in the 13th over.

July 15th 2011

U11 Tas Valley v Cringleford Lodge
In a match which was a great advert for SNCL cricket, Cringleford batted first and with openers Alfie Payne (43) and Joe Dickinson (39) making light work of the Tas Valley bowling looked set for a big score. However once the partnership was broken some disciplined Tas Valley bowling saw the Cringleford score restricted to 103 for 3. Louis Simmons being the pick of the Tas Valley bowlers with 2 for 16.

In reply Tas Valley openers Jonathon Cooper 38 not out and Louis Simmons 36 not out steadily built the Tas Valley innings and saw Tas Valley home with a single off the very last ball of the game.

July 14th 2011

U13 Tas Valley v Topcroft
Topcroft batted first and steadily lost wickets to be bowled out for 46 of which Luke Burridge contributed 14. For Tas Valley Keating Glover with 2 for 1 and Joeseph Wilson with 2 for 2 were the main wicket takers.

In reply Tas Valley did not have it all their own way as some spirited Topcroft bowling saw Tas Valley lose 3 wickets before a steady 21 not out from Joeseph Wilson saw them home.

July 14th 2011

U15 Gt.Melton v Tas Valley
Craig Woolrich with 31 not out and 3 wickets for 1 run, led Melton to a comfortable victory over Hethersett & Tas Valley. The visitors started well and were 43-1 at one stage but, once Joe Bickel (3-0-17-1) had removed the dangerous Joel Howard for 26, Hethersett crumbled.  Scott Lyle (3-1-2-4,) Woolrich (1-1-3-1) and Michael Farmer (0.5-0-0-1) combined to bowl out the visitors for 63.

Lyle and Woolrich then gave Melton a very good start with an opening stand of 40 before Lyle was lbw to Adams for 15 but Farmer then joined Woolrich to see Melton to victory with 7 overs to spare.

July 12th 2011

U13 Garboldisham v Rocklands
Rocklands were subject to an onslaught from the very first over by batters M Branfield and L Rogers. Both players hit balls all over the ground . They both rode their luck and could have been run out a couple of times but the brutal batting continued to the very last over. Both players got personal bests with L Rogers 61 not out and M Branfield 87 not out.

Rocklands were always up against it and weren't helped with the dangerous E Proctor being bowled by N Constance very early. Only M Thresh with 23 stood up to the Garboldisham attack. Garboldisham couldn't get the final wicket and praise goes to Rocklands who battled to the end and chased every ball.

Garboldisham's 173 is the highest total so far in the U13 League this season.

July 12th 2011

U11 Saxlingham v Mulbarton
Mulbarton's opening pair of Polack (29) and Osborn (14) put on 33 runs for the first wicket before Phillips (20) joined Polack for a 50 partnership. Mulbarton scored 87 for 3 with Saxlingham's Bryant taking all three wickets for 16 runs.

Saxlingham did not start well with Mulbarton's Foster striking three times in his first two overs. Fitch (26) got the innings back on track as the home side made steady progress towards the target. Mulbarton had taken 6 wickets with the score on 73 but were frustrated by number 7 Scammell (14no) who guided the team to victory by 1 wicket,

The win preserves Saxlingham's 100% record in this league as they top the table by just one point from second place Tas Valley.

July 11th 2011

U11 Tas Valley v Rocklands
In very hot conditions these two under 11's teams produced a very entertaining game of cricket.

Batting first Rocklands reached 60 for 6 with Matthew Hendrie and Noah Coates being joint top scorers with 8 each. For Tas Valley Oliver South produced an excellent spell of bowling taking 2 for 2 off 3 overs.

In reply Tas Valley openers Jonathon Cooper 21 not out and Louis Simmons 11 not out steadily and surely built the Tas innings against some tight Rocklands bowling and fielding to see Tas Valley home to a 7 wicket win in the 14th over.

June 27th 2011

U17 Hardingham v Mulbarton
Mulbarton, reduced at very short notice to six men by broken bones, travelled to league leaders Hardingham for their U17 fixture. Because of the circumstances, it was mutually agreed that the visitors would bat first to try and make a game of it.

Mulbarton’s openers Gibbins (15) and George (50) made a good start putting on 61 for the first wicket. After Gibbins departure, caught off Fletcher, Button (14) added a further 31 with George before both were removed by Gaskin (2-17) in the twelfth over. A useful third wicket partnership between Bradley (14no) and Culling (12no) swelled the score to a very respectable 128 despite an impressive bowling and fielding performance from the home side.

With only six fielders against such an accomplished side, defending this total would be almost impossible. And so it was. Mulbarton fielded out of their skins with total commitment but with too many gaps openers Fletcher (61no) and Scott (53no) demonstrated their supremacy and, always keeping an eye on the board, steered their side home in the fifteenth over.

June 22nd 2011

U13 Gt.Melton v Mulbarton
After collecting maximum points from their first three games in the league, Mulbarton, batting first, faced a sterner test away against Melton. After the early loss of Mathews, nicking the finest of catches behind, Whitlock (35), fortunate to be dropped twice, rode his luck before being clean bowled by Rennie (1 for 14). Morton (34) and Bartholomew (13no) put on 61 for the third wicket and were perhaps a little disappointed in only managing 28 off the last five overs on this small ground. Melton bowled with real consistency and the visitors had to work hard for their runs - supported with good fielding they never lost sight of the game as the visitors totalled 110 for 3.

In contrast Mulbarton bowled and fielded poorly, giving the batsmen far too much width which was heavily punished on the small outfield. A good c&b by Morton removed the dangerous B.Carding (4) but the runs came freely, boosted by extras, and Melton had 68 on the board by the halfway mark. Stearman (57no) batted with real maturity, well supported by Smith (22). Morton and Garson took good catches and there was a run out towards the end to provide some late excitement but the result was never really in any doubt as Melton crossed the line with only two balls to spare.

Correction
The result and match report published below for the game between Gt.Ellingham and Garboldisham was incorrectly listed as an U15 result. It was in fact an U17 game and the tables have been amended accordingly.

June 17th 2011

U17 - Ellingham v Garboldisham
Great Ellingham produced a very cohesive team display with solid top order batting from J.Lake and J.Clarke seeing off the strong opening bowling attack of Garboldisham. This allowed the middle order and J.Lake (36) C.Reeve (18) D.Thompson (18 no) and M.Miller (7no) to post a total of 106 which was thought to be 20 runs light of a competitive score.

Garbi started of at a good pace putting on 25 for the first wicket. S.Garham bowled a good line and J.Horsecroft bowled extremely tightly (3-9-0). Then the skipper D.Thompson turned the screw taking 2 wickets in his first over. Thompson was not finished there and proceeded to run out 1 batsmen with a direct hit and took a quite simply sublime catch off the tricky slow bowling of Evernet. Lake bowled a good 3 overs taking 2 wickets but it was the skipper again who took the final wicket with a caught and bowled to finish off the Garbi innings on 76 all out.

June 16th 2011

U17 - Garboldisham v Brooke
Brooke batted first and Garboldisham found it difficult to break the opening partnership of M Carver and W Oakey. Carver was eventually run out in the 9th over for 21 but Oakey went on to make his half century not out and Brooke finished on a very respectable 111 for 4. All the Garboldisham wickets were run outs.

C Horn and J Seaman opened for Garby and Horn was soon showing his old magic although he was lucky to be dropped twice before eventually being caught on 49. Seaman batted with style until he too, was caught on 38 with an excellent diving catch from J E Andrews off the bowling of J Rampling. J Paul chipped the winning runs for Garby off the first ball of the 15th over.

June 15th 2011

U15 - Tas Valley v Cringleford Lodge
After winning the toss Cringleford batted enterprisingly and with E Daislie (31) and J Taylor (22), reached 71 for 1 before Tas Valley hit back to bowl Cringleford out for 91.

For Tas Valley the bowling of O Hutt (2 for 8), was well supported by C Clarke (2 for 1) and M Adams (2 for 16).

In reply Tas Valley began losing wickets against some steady  Cringleford bowling and were reduced to 53 for 4 when the dangerous J Howard was brilliantly caught on the boundary for 24. Tas Valley however responded well and a well made 24 not out from J Blake saw them home in the 12th over. For Cringleford E Daislie (2 for 19), F Youngs (1 for 14) and J Taylor (1 for 22) were the wicket takers.

June 14th 2011

U11 - Gt.Melton v Gt.Ellingham
Melton batted first with Howard & Hughes opening building a solid platform before they both fell on 53, Lbw and bowled. These were the only wickets to fall as Steward & Stearman carried on as the last pair finished, before both retiring to let Moore, Shanmugam and Thurston have a bat. The innings closed on 112 for 2, with Ellingham giving away 60 extras.

Ellingham batted next but nobody really got going except J Bisley showing some resistance top scoring with 8 until being bowled by F Hughes.
Ellingham finished on 19 all out, but it was a spirited effort from an inexperienced team.

June 13th 2011

U13 - Garboldisham v Hethersett
Hethersett elected to bat with J.Wilson taking on the Garboldisham bowling and after he had got to 22, of which 20 were boundaries, was bowled by N.Constance. Wickets followed at a quick rate with one for Katie Evans and M.Branfield. It was left to L.Rogers to take the last 4 wickets in his 2.3 over spell only going for 5 runs. One player stood tall for Hethersett that was opener J.Cooper who remained unbeaten till the end.

After a good opening stand from M.Branfield (17) and B.Ingrams (10) Hethersett made Garboldisham work for their runs. Wickets for T.Henderson, J.Wilson and two for C.Clarke  couldn't stop Garboldisham reaching the total with 2.4 overs to spare.

Special praise has to go to all the players and the spectators for their high spirit of cricket.

U13 - Mulbarton keep the pressure on
J.Whitlock & L.Mathews of Mulbarton CC U13 Team

Winning the toss Rocklands chose to bat first. There was some accurate bowling  all round so it was not surprising that Rocklands were bowled out in the 15th over for 65. Jordan Statham & Sam Morton took two wickets apiece.

This was an easily achievable total on this wicket. The openers Jonny Whitlock and Luke Mathews (pictured) did not hang around despatching balls to the boundaries with apparent ease.  The total was achieved in 5 overs allowing us all an early departure.

June 8th 2011

U11 Topcroft v Cringleford Lodge
Topcroft entertained Cringleford in what was as an exciting and sporting match. Topcroft batted first and were progressing slowly until a late knock of 33 not out from No. 4 Sam Day pushed the score up to 84 for 2.

In reply Leo Taylor was the highest scorer for Cringleford with 34. When he was bowled by Under 9 player Jack Day this turned the game. His brother Sam took a wicket but it was a fellow Under 9 player Jacob Rhodes who was the star with the ball taking 3 for 9 from 3 overs. Cringleford finished on 70 for 5 in an excellent game of cricket.

June 5th 2011

U17 Mulbarton v Diss
An opening stand of 68 by Spinks (23) and Pask (61) provided the perfect platform for a big innings by visitors Diss against Mulbarton. The home side struggled with their line and length for much of the innings and it needed an excellent catch by Bradley on the boundary to remove the aggressive Pask. With 72 on the board at the halfway mark, Miller (1-24) and Button (0-19) brought some discipline to the attack as the visitors became rather bogged down, adding only a further 50 for their total of 122 for 3.

Mulbarton quickly fell behind the run rate as the visitors bowled with more accuracy and consistency. Gibbins (20), Button (22), George (14) and Wilford (19) all made good starts but none was able to go on and play a match winning innings, and the fragile tail quickly folded leaving Mulbarton 22 short. Spinks (3-13) and the young Davey (2-9) were the pick of the bowlers in a game between evenly matched sides won on the night by the more focussed and committed team.

Duckworth Lewis used for only second time in League History
The last and only time the League calculator was used was in 2007 to decide the result of an U15 game between Brooke and Bungay. Bungay had scored 170 for for 5 and Brooke replied with 101 for 3 after 10 overs before the heavens opened. The calculator awarded a win to Bungay by a solitary run.

This week the result was a little more clear cut in another U15 game between Gt.Ellingham and Cringleford Lodge.

Gt.Ellingham at 151 for 4 were calculated as having lost 6 wickets and Cringleford at 50 for 2, 3 wickets after 10.3 overs.

On this basis Cringleford’s target score was 85 runs. In scoring 50 runs, Cringleford achieved only 59% of the required total and their final score was calculated at 89 giving Gt.Ellingham a win by 62 runs.

Clarification regarding County Players
There has been some confusion regarding the inclusion of county players* in SNCLeague matches.

The League has so far resisted formalising specific rules covering the participation of county players, leaving it instead to the discretion of team managers in observing the published
Entry Criteria.

The League’s principal objective is to provide competitive cricket for clubs that are not strong or large enough to provide effective opposition in the Junior Alliance Leagues, and, where appropriate, for A sides from large clubs that have too many members for their needs of regular league cricket to be adequately accommodated.

Clubs
are reminded that entry into the league confirms acceptance of; …
”the rules, entry criteria and guidance notes as published on this site.”

There may be isolated instances where the deployment of county players* may be acceptable e.g. in matches between teams with the mutual agreement of both managers, but otherwise clubs are kindly requested to observe both the spirit and the published
entry criteria of The League.

*County players are defined as those listed on the current
Norfolk Cricket Board website for the 2011 season.

The above guidance applies only to boys. For the 2011 season, girl county players may play at their correct age group and non county girls may play two years below their actual age. See
guidance notes and girls cricket.

U17 League - Mulbarton v Garboldisham
With 28 on the board after three overs Garboldisham must have been eyeing a large total, but the home side eventually brought some stability to the attack removing both Asker (12) and Seaman (2) by the end of the fourth over. The Garboldisham innings was becalmed after this with just 50 on the board at the halfway mark. The dangerous Allin (36) kept going before an excellent catch on the boundary (M.Bradley) snuffed out the visitors’ opportunity of a decent score as they batted out their overs (92 for 6).

Mulbarton’s opening pair of Gibbins (51no) and Button (7) made a bright start before Button was bowled in the fifth over with the score on 21. George hit three boundaries before holing out and both Wilford and Bradley came and went as Garboldisham piled on the pressure. With 20 needed off four overs and the tail exposed it was game on but Gibbins, well supported by Culling (5no), guided his team to the winning line with nearly two overs to spare (94 for 4).

Top Week for Tas
U13 - Tas Valley batted first and following a 112 run opening partnership between 12 years old Joeseph Wilson who made a superb 80 and 11 years old Jonathon Cooper 14 not out, finished on 139 for 2. Tristen Henderson also batting well for his 12 not out. For Gt Ellingham M Bennett was the pick of the bowlers with 1 for 11.

Although never up with the required run rate Gt Ellingham nevertheless batted steadily and showed good application to finish on 68 for 1 of which S Gayle made 19 not out and P Gutterridge 11 not out. Although all the Tas bowlers produced relatively economical figures it was Jonathon Cooper 1 for 6 who was the wicket taker.

U15 - Joel Howard with a superb 100 and Max Adams 40 not out were the main contributors to the big Tas Valley score of 188 for 1. In reply Belton fought hard against some tight Tas Valley bowling to finish on 51 for 4 with George Savory being the pick of the Belton batsmen with 32 not out. Max Adams with 2 for 2, Cameron Clarke with 1 for 2 and Fraser Ellis with 1 for 6 were the Tas Valley wicket takers.

U15 - Melton back on top
Melton finished the weekend top of the table after their win away to Thetford. The home side posted a very creditable 99 all out but Melton knocked off the runs for the loss of only two wickets.

May 16th 2011

U11 - Saxlingham edge it in close finish
In a very close game Saxlingham won by 7 runs. Batting first Saxlingham were restricted by some good Tas Valley bowling and closed on 70 for 5, with N Fitch top scoring with a good innings of 29. For Tas Valley Jonathon Cooper produced superb bowling figures of 3 for 0 off 3 overs and was backed up by Tom Worley 1 for 7 off 3 overs and Oliver Mills 1 for 8 off 3 overs.

In reply although not losing wickets Tas Valley found runs hard to come by and finished on 63 for 1 with Jonathon Cooper following up his bowling figures with 26 not out. For Saxlingham Bryant was the wicket taker and finished with 1 for 8 off 3 overs.

May 10th 2011

U13 - Mulbarton take maximum points in low scoring game
The Tas Valley opening pair of Joe Wilson and Nicholas Clarke were dismissed for 4 each and after that their team crumbled.  This was not due to their ineptitude but a remarkable bowling and fielding performance by the Mulbarton side.  It was a pleasure to see a side play as a team so early in the season but more pleasing to see the support for each other.

Matt Samson and Alex Bainbridge gathered the runs required in 3 overs.

Rather than all go home early and in the spirit of this friendly league we mixed the teams up and played an 8 overs a side match where there was much fun and laughter.

U13 League - Gt.Ellingham impress on first outing
Thanks to key performances by M.Thompson  with both bat and ball, Ellingham cruised to an easy win in their first game against Topcroft. Posting an impressive 124 for 3, this was more than enough to secure almost full points as the visitors fell well short and were bowled out for 66.

U17 League - Champions make good start
Hardingham started strongly in the defence of their U17 title, winning their first game against Gt.Ellingham. Manager Stan Fowle commented "Lovely evening, game played in right spirit between two well matched sides, just that the 'home side' had just a little more 'umph'!!! in the middle of their innings. A credit to both 'clubs' on a perfect cricket evening. Already looking forward to the next game."

U17 League - Old Buckenham too strong for Mulbarton
Old Bucks posted a competitive total of 160 thanks largely to a well balanced innings of 73no from M.Long. Mulbarton were in the hunt for a while with good knocks from Gibbins (38) and George (31), but once these two were dismissed, Gibbins by an outstanding catch on the boundary, the lower order was blown away with A.Hall mopping up the final three wickets for ten runs in just fourteen balls.

 Girls' competition demonstrates great strides

The success of the Lady Taverners U13 Club Competition run by the Norfolk Cricket Board, which has attracted eight entries for this summer, demonstrates the great strides made in the women's game over the last few years.

The Clubs are being split into two regionalised groups of four with regular matches on a home and away basis during the season. The two group winners and runners-up will then compete in a finals day at Great Melton Cricket Club to determine the County champions. A major change will be the introduction of hard ball cricket for these matches.

With most clubs opting for this tournament, The League's U13 softball competition has failed to attract sufficient entries for 2011.

 New proposals adopted for 2011

Following the end of season consultation with participating clubs, the following rule changes will be adopted for the 2011 competition.

• For a trial period of one year the U11 League games will be played on Sunday mornings only.

• Defaulting clubs who fail to fulfil a fixture for reasons other than the weather will have ten points deducted from their current total. Their opponents will be awarded an average of their points from completed games added to their total at the end of the season.

There are no other changes to the rules.

Consultation results and proposed rule changes for 2011

The League has now completed consultation and feedback on the 2010 season. All but one club provided their views and suggestions and these have been considered in proposing any changes to the rules and structure for next summer.

Generally, all clubs were happy with the format, rules and points system of the competition and the suggestion to move to average rather than total points to determine league positions was rejected by a narrow margin.

The number of teams in each league was almost unanimously endorsed as being about right. The only two clubs disagreeing with this actually wanted more games.

Most felt that the start of the league was at the correct time although a few suggested that the competition ended too late in the season.

There were two major issues for consideration; the proposal to play U11 and U13 games on Sunday mornings only and the treatment of no result games.

With regard to no result fixtures, several clubs were clearly frustrated that some teams had on occasion cancelled their games at short notice, often more than once. Apart from the inconvenience and disappointment of losing a game completely, some felt that the award of 10 points for such a default was often less than they would have achieved had the match been played.

One of the proposals to address this was that defaulting clubs would be docked 10 points (as is the current case) and that their opponents would receive the average of their points accrued from completed fixtures added to their total at the end of the season. This third proposal was almost unanimously supported.

On the most contentious proposition of moving to a Sunday only programme for U11 and U13 leagues, there was only limited support at U13 level but for the U11s, five out of seven clubs voted in favour of this change.

Thirty seven teams entered the leagues in 2010; two of these withdrew before the start of the programme and another two half way through the season. Already there are 38 registered interest entries for 2011 with the leagues likely to be capped at ten teams.

The proposed changes to the league in 2011 are:

No result games.

Defaulting clubs who fail to fulfil a prearranged fixture for any reasons other than the weather will have ten points deducted from their total with their opponents awarded an average of their points from completed fixtures added to their total at the end of the season.

U11 & U13 Leagues

For a trial period of one year the U11 league will move to a Sunday only programme, played in the mornings. Fixtures will be provided by the league and matches completed on a fortnightly basis. Two reserve dates will be available for weather affected matches only. Although there is always some resistance to change, a regular fixture date, in line with many other youth sports (particularly soccer) will be welcomed by members and parents alike.

There are no changes proposed to the U13, U15 and U17 leagues.

Clubs are welcome to respond to the above for a period of thirty days from this date after which they will go forward for adoption and incorporation into the 2011 rules.

 U13 Girls' Cricket

The inaugural year of the U13 girls’ softball league attracted only three entries in 2010. Several players who took part in these games are now ready for the hardball game and the Norfolk Cricket Board is working hard to address this situation.

The South Norfolk Community League is prepared to continue running an U13 softball competition as an introduction to competitive cricket if there are sufficient entries. This would run during the summer term and finish before the school holidays.

If you or a team you know are interested in entering please visit the register your interest form here.

Record number of clubs register interest for 2011
2011 will mark the fifth anniversary of the competition and with a record number of clubs pre registering their interest for next season it promises to be another bumper summer for the league.

Clubs listed below have expressed their interest in playing in next year's competition and while they are not committed to entering a team at this stage, it does give a good idea as to the eventual size of the groups.

If your club is not listed below but you would like to register, without commitment, for 2011, please enter your details on our contact us page. Entry will close at the end of January 2011.

The results of the consultation along with details of any proposed changes to the league will be published shortly.

 End of Season Round Up

Thirty seven teams combined to make the fourth season of The South Norfolk Community League the most successful ever.

With 136 matches played across five leagues, there were plenty of opportunities for young cricketers to impress in the eight a side sixteen over format.

The new U13 girls’ softball league demonstrated the improving skills in a competition that could have been won by any of the three teams, but Old Buckenham’s consistent performances secured them the inaugural trophy.

In the U11 league it was Gt.Melton who left the others trailing in their wake as they won all six of their games by considerable margins. J.Greenslade was particularly dominant with the bat over the summer scoring several half centuries for his team as they remained in a class of their own. Mulbarton and Tas Valley were runners up but a long way short of Melton’s impressive points tally.

At U13 level Garboldisham retained the title for the second year running demonstrating the consistent standards at this club. They lost only once in their campaign in a low scoring game to newcomers Cringleford Lodge who finished league runners up. This was the most competitive group with just six points separating the four chasing teams.

Bunwell fielded an all girls team in this league under the South Norfolk District Development banner and found the going tough, although a victory against Rocklands Royals must have lifted their spirits. The experience of playing in a proper hardball league will have provided valuable experience and serve them well in the future.

It was same again too at U15 with Melton wrapping up a brace of titles and losing their only game to rivals Garboldisham. Gt.Ellingham finished second in a league which provided some very close matches.

In 2009 Hardingham lost out for the U17 honour even though they won all of their games, but it was second time lucky as they overcame all of their opponents and, helped by a tie between Garboldisham and Old Buckenham, made sure that their name was on the plate for 2010.

Many youth cricketers were able to make their mark with bat and ball over the summer and the best performances in each age group were:

 U11 & U13 League Proposals for 2011

This summer some clubs have been experiencing difficulties in raising sides, particularly in the school holidays, or providing suitable supervision at U11 and U13 level. This has impacted on teams who have already prepared and organised their squads before a fixture has been cancelled, often at very short notice.

Proposals for the U11 & U13 2011 Leagues are:
Leagues at these levels restricted to eight teams.
• All games played on Sunday mornings only.
• U11 & U13 games played on alternate weeks.
• Fixture list provided by The League.
• Season starting early May and finishing at the end of July.
• Weather affected games not replayed.
• League tables based on points average rather than total.
m
It is stressed that these changes are only proposals at present but initial reactions from several clubs have been positive. All clubs and managers will have the opportunity to comment on these and any other matters or concerns affecting the leagues in the consultation document which will be circulated shortly.

All feedback from players, parents and coaches is welcomed here

 U11 - Gt.Melton v Garboldisham

Having recorded the highest ever league total of 213 last year at Bunwell, Garboldisham U11s set another record, this time for the lowest score of 18 runs as they slumped to a heavy defeat at Melton Park.

This last game of the season was played in good sprit by both teams. Melton batted first Ben Carding top scored with 39 followed by Joseph Greenslade 29 and Ryan Howard 14. Emma had best bowling figures for Garboldisham taking 2 wickets for 9 runs with a wicket each for T Hudderston and W Pierson plus a run out. Garboldisham's top scorer was W Pierson 11.

Melton's accurate bowling took regular wickets with Luke Marchant, Matt Rennie and Craig Attwell taking 2 wickets each and 1 for Matt Foster there was also 2 stumpings for Joseph Greenslade. This match ends a great season for  Melton - the first season of cricket for some of the players.

 U13 - Rockland Royals v Mulbarton

A half century from Craig Ellis (53) provided the cornerstone of Rocklands' innings after the promising looking Miners was run out.  With Mulbarton’s bowling lacking venom and the fielding rather wooden, the home side were able to total a competitive 87.

With openers Samson (20) and Whitlock (22) proceeding serenely towards the target the game looked good as won, but a decisive period of three overs, including two maidens, in which Whitlock was run out and Samson bowled turned the game on its head. Rocklands bowled well, particularly Miners and Elllis, and this, along with good fielding and Ellis’ earlier half century proved the difference between the two teams as Mulbarton fell short of their target.

August 20th 2010

 U15 - Hardingham v Mulbarton

B.Falcon was the star of the Hardingham innings with an imperious 73 no against a rather off colour bowling attack from the visitors. Apart from Everett (2-10), who was excellent, Mulbarton generally bowled too short and wide and were punished accordingly by the rampant Falcon who was largely responsible for propelling the home side to a competitive 123 off their sixteen overs.

Having popped the coaching manual into the bin, Mulbarton’s George proceeded to bludgeon his way to a career best 87no whilst retaining the strike for most of the innings. This was just as well as his five partners’ mustered only 5 runs between them. Hardingham’s attack was also rather wayward but both B.Falcon (1-18) and F.Falcon (2-13) bowled well, the latter outstandingly for an eleven year old.

George should be grateful to the Hardingham grounds man who had produced a pitch of even bounce as he rode his luck to produce a thrilling and enormously entertaining victory with only two balls to spare.

 U13 - Tas Valley v Mulbarton

After a steady start, aided by some good Mulbarton catching Tas Valley disastrously lost 4 wickets for 1 run in one remarkable over from Sam Morton and thereafter were soon all out for a meagre 24. A total that while losing 2 wickets on the way Mulbarton had little difficulty passing for a 5 wicket victory.

August 14th 2010

 U15 - Mulbarton v Rocklands

Things could have been worse for Mulbarton with one man short and skipper George out third ball of the innings; but not a lot. A good knock from Thompson (25) helped to restore some respectability but Rocklands bowled and fielded well, particularly Bart (3 for 18). No other batsman managed double figures and the now familiar collapse meant that the rest of the team added just 19 runs between them before being all out in the eleventh over for their lowest score of the season.

Excellent opening spells from Bradley and George restricted the visitors to 20 off the first six overs but after this the options were strictly limited and the team became listless and deflated. Miller, who should have bowled more, again troubled the batsmen with Bradley taking a good catch off his bowling, but Etheridge (20) and Hinchcliff (16no) saw the visitors home with more than four overs to spare.

Saxlingham unable to complete league programme

After struggling to fulfil their fixtures throughout the season, Saxlingham CC have bowed to the inevitable and withdrawn both their U13 and U15 teams from the remaining games.

It is always disappointing when clubs are unable to complete their league programme and penalties have to be applied.

The committee has decided to treat the U13 league as a withdrawal and awarded 10 points, in accordance with the rules, to teams with outstanding fixtures against Saxlingham

At U15 level, teams still to play Saxlingham will be awarded 10 points with 30 points being deducted from Saxlingham.

August 2nd 2010

 U15 - Gt.Melton v Saxlingham

Joe Bush scored 31 not out and Toby Wyatt 23 not out as Melton overhauled Saxlingham's 66 all out in 10 overs.  Matt Nichols top-scored for the home side but it was the leg spin of Peter Frazer (2-20) and Joe Bickel (3-12) that allowed Melton to chase a comparatively modest total.

August 2nd 2010

 U11 - Tas Valley v Topcroft

Wilson on his own

Tas Valley were thankful for the return of Joeseph Wilson as he again proved to be the mainstay of the Tas Valley batting with an assured 44 not out in the Tas total of 75 for 5. Incredibly only one other run came from the bat as extras contributed 30 to the Tas total.

For Topcroft Luke Burridge bowled particularly well with 2 for 6 from his 3 overs and also scored a valuable 35 as Topcroft chipped away at the Tas total to reach their winning target of 76 for 5 in the 15th over.

U17 - Hardingham wrap up title with win at Diss

After coming close last season, Hardingham wrapped up the U17 title with a good win at Rectory Meadow.

Batting first they posted an impressive total of 163 for 0 with J.Downes (88no) again providing the backbone of the innings.

Diss batted well in reply but were unable to match the visitors rate falling short by 31 runs.

 U11 - Rocklands Rustlers v Hethersett & Tas Valley

Wow! What a game!

Tas batted first and steady batting especially by Jonathon Cooper (16 not out) and L.Simmons (11 not out). Rocklands bowled tidily with Matthew Hendrie and Matthew Noonan taking a wicket each.

In reply Rocklands lost Noah Coates early but a partnership of 67 between Matthew Noonan (8) and Edward Proctor (43) seemed to put them in a strong position, needing 18 runs from the last 4 overs). However fine bowling from Tas meant that 5 runs were needed from the last over. An exceptional last over from Jonathan Cooper (3-5) (including the dangerous Proctor) meant that Tas were home by 4 runs.

A fine game enjoyed by a large crowd. All the boys can be proud of their part in this one.

 U15 - Hardingham v Mulbarton

Choosing to field Mulbarton made a bright start with the opening bowlers George and Miller denying Hardingham any real scoring opportunities and conceding just 16 runs off their combined spells. Harris (35) and Falcon (14) put on 62 for the first wicket but took over ten overs to do so. The rest of the Mulbarton attack lacked penetration although the standard of ground fielding was encouraging as the rain began to fall and conditions deteriorated.

The two sides played on to the end of the innings with Hardingham doing well to reach 102 thanks to some aggressive hitting at the end from Bloom (19no).

But as the rain continued to fall and the square and outfield became greasy, there was no choice but to abandon what would have been a very interesting run chase.

Match facts: Hardingham 102 for 3 (16 overs). Match abandoned.

 U11 - Tas Valley v Garboldisham

Tas Valley batted first and made 129 for 0 with Joeseph Wilson scoring a superb 88 not out and being well supported by Jonathon Cooper with 20 not out. For Garboldisham Oscar Rushen was the most economical bowler with 0 for 11 off 3 overs.

When Garboldisham batted Campbell Young made an excellent 31, but 3 run outs did not help the Garboldisham cause and they were bowled out for 63, with the Tas Valley wicket takers being Crispin Clarke 1 for 4, Tom Worley 1 for 6, Louis Simmonds 1 for 8 and Joeseph Wilson 1 for 10.

July 18th 2010

 U15 - Gt.Melton v Belton

R.Tiramana scored 58 not out in Belton's total of 108-2.  Joe Bickel was Melton's most economical bowler with figures of 1-5 from 3 overs.

Melton's prolific opening pair of George King and Chris Greenslade made chasing Belton's total look comparatively easy.  They were quick to punish any loose bowling.  King scored 45 not out and Greenslade made 55 before retiring, allowing Toby Wyatt (5 not out) to hit the winning runs in the 12th over.

July 16th 2010

 U15 - Tas Valley v Gt.Ellingham

Gt Ellingham produced some tight bowling and good fielding to restrict Tas Valley to 89 for 4, with Lake 1 for 5, Sterment 1 for 9, Evernett 1 for 17 and Thompson 1 for 17 being the wicket takers.

For Tas Valley, Wastell top scored with 40 not out. In reply while Howard bowled well in taking 1 for 7, Thompson 38 not out and Zeke 30 not out saw Gt Ellingham to 93 for 1 and a well earned victory.

July 14th 2010

 U11 - Tas Valley v Gt.Melton

On a warm Sunday morning at Tas Valley, Gt Melton produced an impressive all round performance to record a comprehensive 76 run victory.

Batting first Gt Melton scored 138 without loss at the end of their 16 overs, with Joe Greenslade making a superb 76 not out and being well supported by Ben Carding 32 not out.

As with their batting Gt Melton's bowlers proved to be equaly effective and bowled Tas Valley out for 62, with the main wicket takers being Joe Greenslade 3 for 12 and M Rennie 2 for 5. For Tas Valley Joeseph Wilson top scored with 25.

July 12th 2010

 U15 - Gt.Melton v Garboldisham

L.Taylor scored 49 in 16 overs before being caught and bowled off the last ball.  J.Seaman scored 29 not out as Garboldisham totalled 137-3.

Melton's reply was built on Toby Wyatt's 36 and, with Joe Bickle scoring 16 they had an outside chance of victory but, needing 10 an over off the last 3 proved too much.

July 9th 2010

 U15 - Tas Valley v Belton

Despite a fine 70 not out from Joel Howard, Tas Valley could only muster 108 for 5 from their 16 overs, with the best Belton bowling being provided by Romesh Tiramana with 1 for 5 off 3 overs.

In reply Belton openers Tiramana and Savory were never in trouble with Tiramana batting powerfully with 12 fours and  a six, in his 57 not out, while Savory provided a good 20 not out to take Belton to a fine 7 wicket win.

July 6th 2010

 U17 - Mulbarton v Old Buckenham

Looking for their first win in this league against visitors Old Buckenham, Mulbarton despatched both openers with good spells from Batch and Whitlock by the fifth over. Long and Anthony should have joined them soon after but both were dropped from consecutive balls off the unlucky Whitlock in the next over. Although Anthony went soon afterwards, Long capitalised on his good luck to provide the backbone of the Bucks total with 53no. Having kept a lid on the scoring early in the innings, Mulbarton conceded 52 from the last five overs as Bucks finished on 126.

Initially well up with the rate in reply, Gibbins top scored with 33 but Old Buckenham bowled well, with Thompson (3 for 11) particularly destructive, pitching the ball up and making life difficult for the home side. The frustration was evident as wickets tumbled; what had initially seemed an attainable total gradually receded into the distance as the Mulbarton challenge fell away leaving Old Buckenham comfortable winners.

 U15 - Hethersett & Tas Valley v Mulbarton

Put into bat Tas made a torrid start losing both Woodward and Wistel before double figures were on the board. An excellent partnership of 84 between Adams (32no) and Hutt (35) rebuilt the innings but Mulbarton bowled and fielded well before Hutt was dismissed last ball to restrict the home side to 89.

On this small ground with its scorched outfield this was a challenging total to defend and George (58no) hit a brutal half century taking Mulbarton halfway towards their target by the end of the fourth over. There was some success for the bowlers taking three wickets with Wilson (1 for 15) particularly impressive but despite the best efforts of Tas in the field, the visitors reached their target with more than six overs to spare.

U13 Girls - Old Buckenham win inaugural title

Old Buckenham secured the inaugural U13 girls trophy with a convincing win over Mulbarton to finish the season unbeaten.

An under par Mulbarton played well below their capabilities as their own challenge for the title melted away.

Bucks bowled and fielded well to restrict the visitors to 276 for 4 (net 256) before replying with some attractive and confident batting taking the score well beyond their opponents (net 286).

Although evenly matched, Old Buckenham were far more cohesive and motivated on the night and thoroughly deserved their win. Well done girls.

 U11 - Gt.Melton v Mulbarton

Mulbarton's openers Morton and Arthurs batted steadily until the 6th over when Arthurs was bowled playing across a straight ball. Bartholomew did not last long beaten by a good ball from Ben Carding that caught him LBW. Kidner and Wear  played well but runs were hard to find with the total finishing on 83. Sam Morton top scored with 31no.

The dangerous Carding fell early to Morton but Greenslade, in great form at the moment, scored another unbeaten half century to guide Melton to an easy win with more than five overs to spare.

 U11 - Rocklands Rustlers v Gt.Melton

A fine knock by J.Greenslade  powered Gt. Melton to a good total on a very warm morning at Rocklands. He received good support from B. Carding (14) and R.Smith (8 not out).

In reply Rocklands lost wickets at regular intervals although Edward Proctor's 20 did give the home crowd some encouragement. Good bowling though from all the Melton bowlers led by B.Carding 2-2, J.Greenslade 2-6, R.Howard 1-10, and M.Rennie 1-8, ensured a comfortable win.

U13 - Tas Valley Match Reports

Tas Valley v Rocklands Raiders

In a high scoring match which Tas Valley won by 26 runs, Tas Valley batted first and reached 141 for 1 at the close of their innings, with Matt Wastell 57 not out and Joeseph Wilson 48 not out producing an unbroken 2nd wicket partnership of 115. While both batsmen batted extremely well special mention must go to 11 year old Joeseph Wilson as it is the second time in 3 under 13 matches that he has batted throughout the full 16 overs to finish on 48 not out.

In reply Rocklands looked to be struggling at 30 for 3 in the 7th over, but with G Evans 51 not out and E Crabtree 27 not out, they made a spirited recovery to finish on 115 for 3. For Tas Valley Matt Wastell took 2 for 21 off 3 overs and Jonathon Cooper 1 for 13 off 3 overs.

Tas Valley v Cringleford

Cringleford Lodge and Tas Valley produced an excellent and close game, which Cringleford Lodge eventually won by 7 runs. Batting first some accurate bowling restricted Cringleford to 67 for 0, with J Malcolm finishing on 28 not out and J Laney on 25 not out. In reply

Tas Valley soon began losing wickets, but with the score on 60 for 5 in the 13th over and with Tas Valley's top scoring batsman Joeseph Wilson still at the wicket the match was in the balance. However Tas Valley's hopes of victory were dashed by a brilliant direct hit which ran out Joeseph Wilson for 21. For Cringleford although most of their bowlers performed well, J Malcolm produced the best figures with 2 for 2 off 2 overs.

June 26th 2010

 U15 - Mulbarton v Gt.Ellingham

A maiden half century by George (55), well supported by his opening partner Whitlock (22), gave the home side a perfect platform for a large score against visitors Gt.Ellingham. Mulbarton were looking good with 74 on the board by the eighth over before these two departed in quick succession; George caught and Whitlock bowled. Thompson (30no) helped keep the score moving but good bowling combined with excellent ground fielding by the visitors slowed the rate and Thompson’s partners made only the briefest appearances at the other end. When a total of 150 had easily looked possible at one stage, Mulbarton had to settle for 127. Clark (2 for 18) and Thomson (2 for 17) bowled particularly well.

It should have been enough though with Bradley and Everett’s accurate opening spells stifling the run rate. At the halfway mark Ellingham still needed 83 and a comfortable win for Mulbarton looked the most likely outcome. Whitlock also bowled well but the rest of the attack lacked control and the rate accelerated in part thanks to the profligacy of extras (51). It was an edgy finish with Lake (43) looking particularly threatening. With 31 required off the last two overs a win looked a real possibility for the visitors. But in the end it was just too much and Mulbarton were lucky to scrape home by 6 runs with Lake caught last ball by Thompson off his own bowling.

 U13 - Garboldisham v Rocklands Royals

On a warm evening Rocklands batted first and Craig Ellis carried his bat throughout the innings and in doing so helped Rocklands to finish on 98 for 3 wckets.

Garboldisham without top batsman Dan Taylor knew a solid start was essential. Sam Baker and Jake Snowling ran for everything and gradually the boundaries came and when the first wicket fell the scores were level. Sam being out for a maiden 50. Jack Haliwell guided the ball to the boundary for the winning runs.

Well done to all at Rocklands including Mervin and their faithful scorer Maureen for playing in a great spirit.

 U11 - Mulbarton v Topcroft

Mulbarton lost the toss and were made to bat first with the openers Bartholomew (14) and Morton (13) taking the score to 44 by the halfway stage before Sam Morton played on. Good contributions followed from the others with A.Bainbridge (17no) top scoring in a total that finished on 98.

In reply Topcroft struggled to get runs on the board and the home side bowled well taking six wickets, all bowled, to restrict the visitors to 68 by the close.

 U13 - Mulbarton v Gt.Ellingham

Gt.Ellingham won the toss and elected to field. At this level, it is always easier to chase the runs. The opening pair of Whitlock and  Lynds started with purpose but lost their wickets early which left the team struggling on 13 for 2 at the end of the 3rd over. Josh Bartholomew partially repaired the innings with a resounding 29 that included  four 4s and a 6 but none of his partners were able to hang around and Mulbarton were bowled out rather cheaply for 76.

The first two batsmen for Gt Ellingham scored 25 and 15 apiece but at a very slow rate. With only 18 on the board by the end of the 7th over Mulbarton looked well on track for a surprising win. But Ellingham responded well and got the board moving again to chase down this modest total in the penultimate over.

U17 - High scoring game at Rectory Meadow

Nick Mackenzie of Mulbarton CC

Nick Mackenzie
of Mulbarton CC

June 17th 2010

The Diss boys having been put into bat on the small ground gave the Mulbarton’s opening attack a real pasting. Mulbarton fielded energetically but Spinks (40), Blakely (31) and C.Pask (59), had 107 on the board by the half way mark and a massive score looked likely. But Mulbarton kept going and good catches from Mackenzie and a corker from Wilford, along with wickets for Batch, Culling and Gibbins, pegged the home side back as they managed only a further 66 off their remaining eight overs to reach 173; an achievable total on this small ground.

The visitors needed a good start but Gibbins was back in the pavilion before the end of the first over top edging a ball to the keeper. George (22) and Mackenzie (65) put on 67 for the second wicket before George perished in the same manner as Gibbins. Well behind the rate now Mackenzie pushed on but his partners came and went before he himself was caught. A plucky innings of 13no at the end from Batch kept some pressure on but there was too much to do and Mulbarton finished 29 short of their target in a pulsating and exhilarating game. Pick of the bowlers was A.Blakely with 2 for 10.

 U15 - Garboldisham v Rocklands Rockets

The visitors batted first but struggled to get enough runs on the board as the good bowling from the Garboldisham lads kept them pinned down.

Rocklands' opener, J Noonan dabbed a ball that spiralled high for a well-taken catch by Tom Shaw fielding at third man. G Wayne hit a nice string of fours before nicking a ball in the following over from Ben Holdsworth for a well taken catch from Garby keeper Lewis Taylor. And in case the umpire was in two minds as to whether Wayne had edged it or not, quick-thinking Taylor followed up with a stumping as the batsman stepped out of his crease.

The Rocklands' number 3, S. Hinchcliffe looked handy with the bat before being bowled by Joe Seaman. Seaman was the pick of the Garby bowlers finishing on 2 for 7 off 3 and there was economic bowling from Joe Paul (0 for 5 off 3) and a nice spell from Nathan Lamb (0 for 12 off 3) who showed that he can bowl as well as keep wicket. Nathan was having a day off from his usual position behind the stumps. Rocklands finished on 78 for 6.

Garboldisham openers Matt Allin and Joe Seaman got off to a slow but patient start. By the fourth over the runs began to flow until Seaman (9 runs) swept a shot into the hands of the Rocklands fielder off the bowling of J Baker. In at 3, Lewis Taylor played an assortment of delicate shots to finish on 12 not out. But it was Matt Allin who knocked the winning shot to leave Garboldisham on 80 for 1 after 11 overs and a win of 6 wickets. Allin, buoyed up from a Sunday friendly the previous day where he'd scored 82, finished on 41.

 U11 - Tas Valley v Gt.Ellingham

Tas Valley batted first and scored 80 for 3, with Casper King providing a top score of 19 not out.

For Gt Ellingham Will Watling took 2 for 12 from 3 overs and Kelsey Lake 1 for 8 from 2 overs.

In reply Gt Ellingham got off to a good start with an opening partnership of 22. However once the opening partnership was broken good Tas Valley bowling in particular from Jonathan Cooper with 3 for 7 from 3 overs and Joeseph Wilson 2 for 4 from 3 overs saw Gt Ellingham being bowled out for 50,of which Will Watling added to his good bowling with a top score of 13.

 U11 - Rocklands Rustlers v Garboldisham

Exceptionally accurate bowling by the Garboldisham team restricted Rocklands to 51. Edward Proctor's innings of 24 contained three 4's. Garboldisham gave away only 13 in extras throughout the 16 overs.

Rocklands tried hard in reply but despite excellent catches from Alex Neil and Matthew Noonan Garboldisham reached their target in the 10th over.

Girls League - Mulbarton v Garboldisham

Asked to bat after losing the toss the Mulbarton innings started brightly with M.Bird (8) and C.Bond putting on 24 for the first pair. Good contributions followed from all of the others with S.Leek (27) and R.Armes (24) particularly impressive. These large scores along with much improved running between the wickets propelled the Mulbarton score to an impressive 323 for the loss of just one wicket (net 318). Bessie was pick of the visitors’ attack with her three overs costing just 16.

Garboldisham matched Mulbarton run for run until the twelfth over but crucially lost four wickets; two run outs, a good catch by Leek and one bowled. Needing 64 off the last four overs was a herculean task and that they managed 36 was largely credit to an accomplished innings of 20 from C.Evans.

This was a cohesive effort from both teams which provided an entertaining evening enjoyed by a large and appreciative crowd.

U11 - Bunwell pull out of competition

Bunwell have announced their withdrawal from the U11 league having failed to attract enough players in this age group.

Youth manager Chris Brook said "Bunwell under 11 team will be unable to play in this years competition due to a lack of players. Last year at training we were getting 30 kids regularly but this year we have dropped down to 8 with only 3 suitable to play hardball cricket...we cannot see how we can complete our fixtures at present."

"Rest assured we will be back as youth is the future."

The committee have decided not to seek a replacement for Bunwell at this late stage.

 U13 - Rocklands Raiders v SNDDG

Good match played in good spirit and all the players enjoyed themselves. Notable batting performances by Ethan Crabtree (Rocklands) - 36 runs and E Reay (SNDDG) - not out 22 runs.

 U13 - Garboldisham v Mulbarton

Batting first, Garboldisham had a strong side who knew how to exploit the many spaces created by 8 a side cricket.  Their openers scored 55 and 12 apiece.  It was obvious that they had a good eye for the ball and had power behind their strokes so any loose ball was punished.  The Mulbarton side showed the opposition how to field preventing a number of boundaries with enthusiastic dives and getting their bodies behind the ball.  Sam Morton managed to bowl Taylor (55) with a well pitched up ball and suddenly there was light at the end of the tunnel (a long one as the score was 65 for 1 after 6 overs). However it took until the 9th over for Jonny Whitlock to take a catch behind off Sam Bartholomew’s bowling to get the 2nd opener out.  The 3rd and 4th batsmen scored 28 and 34 NO to establish a high score for this level of cricket.  Theo Lynds lifted the gloom with a well bowled first ball to take the wicket of Snowling (28) but by now the score was 125. Matthew Samson was rewarded for some good bowling with an LBW decision in the last over.

It was going to take some committed batting to prevent a comprehensive defeat. This is what we got with the opening pair of Jonny Whitlock (36) and Ed Hodges (5) batting through to the 6th over before Ed Hodges  was bowled.  Jonny Whitlock batted with style and purpose and should be well pleased with his contribution.  Matthew Samson (16) came in at No 3 and picked up the pace of running between the wicket taking the score to 74  before being bowled in the 11th over. Josh Bartholomew (9) tried valiantly to maintain the momentum with two well hit boundaries.  What he lacks in style he made up with sheer effort.  However stepping across the wicket earned him an easy LBW decision. This left the remainder of the batting 3 overs to make up 67 runs which was clearly not going to happen so it was nice to see the team make a collective decision to ensure they got into 3 figures and earn a well deserved point for their efforts.

Girls' League - Ellingham/Rocklands withdraw from competition.

Despite the very best efforts from these two clubs they have been unable to recruit enough girls to field a team in this new competition.

With regret they have announced their withdrawal from this summer's league.

U11 - Topcroft outclassed by Melton

On a glorious evening Gt Melton outclassed Topcroft to win by 62 runs. With one player failing to arrive, Gt Melton made the most of the spaces in the field and scored 94 for 2 with the impressive B Carding scoring 43.

B Carding then impressed with the ball taking 2 for 1 from his 1 over. Topcroft never got going and scored 32 all out against some disciplined bowling by the visitors.

U13 Girls' League - Bucks run out winners in closely contested game

It needed something special to drag us all up to Orchard Park Mulbarton on an evening better suited to a quiet snooze in a comfy chair. And it was special; the very first girls' league game at The Club against Old Buckenham. Put into bat, the visitors made steady if unspectacular progress towards a competitive total of which nearly three quarters were extras. They made 31 off the bat but more importantly only lost two wickets. Hayley was top scorer with a solid 11 not out.

Mulbarton's reply followed pretty much the same pattern and with 46 runs needed off the final four overs, a victory for Old Buckenham looked certain. They hadn't reckoned on Rosie Armes (21 no) though who brought the game to life clubbing two sixes and two fours in an over that cost 24 runs. Suddenly the crowd were interested again as a last gasp win looked possible, but unfortunately the dashing cavalier spent most of the remaining three overs marooned at the non strikers end and Buckenham, taking two late wickets, were able to cling on with eight runs to spare.

 U15 - Saxlingham v Mulbarton

Mulbarton out of sorts

Tip and run anyone? Well of course not. But no one had told Saxlingham who, put into bat by the visitors, set about plundering the Mulbarton bowling with quick calling and running between the wickets; impressive stuff. Helped in their task by sloppy fielding, the pair of Fleming (58) and Bailey (25) put on 84 for the second wicket. With 100 on the board by the tenth over, even after these two were removed by Rhatigan and Pocklington respectively, the momentum continued as the home side finished on an impressive 146.

Where Mulbarton had been lethargic in the field, the home side were bursting with energy. After George (7) was run out by a direct hit and Whitlock (12) dismissed to an astonishing reaction catch at mid off there was only ever going to be one result. Bradley batted tenaciously for his 19 before Mulbarton’s reply fizzled out only halfway towards the target.

Outstanding bowling & fielding performance by the Royals.

Cringleford all out in 9 overs for 23 runs. Other notable bowling performances by: Craig Ellis - 2 overs 2 wickets for 2 runs, Matt Miners - 2 overs, wicket maiden, 1 wicket for 3 runs, Tom Wagg - 2 overs 1 wicket for 8 runs. Rocklands chased down the score in the 5th over for the loss of 2 wickets.

U15 - Last ball win against Hardingham sees Melton go top

Excellent match.  One ball remaining when Chris Greenslade hit the winning four.  Melton were 6 wickets down with last man, 11-year-old Joe Greenslade, joining his brother at the wicket.  Chris (an U13) batted very well for his 44 not out.

Hardingham's J.Harris was the mainstay of Hardingham's innings with an unbeaten half-century.

 U13 - Mulbarton v Rocklands Raiders

Rocklands Raiders were the visitors to Orchard Park for their U13 fixture against Mulbarton who, batting first, accumulated the bulk of their early runs through extras. Bartholomew (19) and Pocklington (8) put on 69 for the first wicket before an attacking innings from Morton (23) propelled the final score to a competitive 125 for 5.  Most of the Rocklands attack struggled with their line and only Crabtree (2 for 10) and Evans (2 for 17) managed any real control with the ball.

The visitors reply started briskly with quick runs coming off the opening attack. Already 31 on the board by the fifth over, the target looked well in reach but when Morton (2 for 8) removed the dangerous Crabtree (23), the momentum stalled. Evans (14) pushed on but he had no real support from his partners and the innings quickly collapsed to 58 all out.

A pleasing debut for two Saxlingham players with Matt Wileman batting very well for 24 no.
Craig Ellis for Rocklands bowled very well and was a very effective bat, making 28.
The game ended in a tight finish on equal scores with both sides having 3 wickets down after Rocklands scrambled a single off the final ball.

U13 - Holders off to a flyer on polling day

Thanks to Peter Barnes who agreed to a late switch of venue.  The game should have been played at Great Melton but was switched as the Melton pavilion was being used as a polling station.

It was a close game, played in a good spirit.  Chris Greenslade scored 50 for Melton before being 'retired' and D.Taylor did the same for Garboldisham - also retiring.

Weather has final say in first girls' game

The very first U13 girls' league game fell foul of the unseasonable May weather as a potentially exciting finish was ruined by heavy rain.

Garboldisham posted a competitive 282 for 2 off their innings and Old Buckenham looked set fair to challenge this with a good start, reaching 236 for 2 before the heavens opened.

A tie was agreed between the teams.

Last Ball thriller goes Mulbarton's Way

U15 Mulbarton v Belton

With Mulbarton winning the toss and opting to bowl, the visitor’s two openers looked out of sorts against good opening spells from Bradley and Holden with most of their total accumulating from extras. The home side’s fielding was a little erratic at first but tightened up as the bitter north easterly wind and plummeting temperatures encouraged any opportunity to run around; avoiding the onset of hypothermia. Belton accelerated after this before James Whitlock removed the dangerous looking Savoury (15) as part of an outstanding spell (3 for 17) and J.Bartholomew took care of Tirimana (23). From then on good fielding and bowling pegged the visitors back with only 29 runs coming from the last 7 overs.

With 96 the target, like Belton, the home side struggled to get the board moving. B.Wood bowled a particularly frugal spell with his three overs yielding just six runs, including the only maiden of the match.. By the tenth over, two wickets down, 60 was still needed and the match was inexorably drifting away. James Whitlock (29no) and J.Bartholomew (32no) however had other ideas. With different styles; one stylish and technically classic, the other brutal and aggressive, they complemented each other perfectly, mounting a sustained attack on the total with 47 runs coming from the next 4 overs. With six runs needed off the last over, an overthrow off the last ball enabled Mulbarton to scramble past the winning post.

Match facts: Belton 96 for 4 (16 overs). Mulbarton 97 for 2 (16 overs). Mulbarton won by 5 wickets.

 Format for Girls Competition

After canvassing the clubs involved: Garboldisham, Gt.Ellingham & Rocklands, Mulbarton and Old Buckenham, option 2 was chosen as the preferred format for the inaugural competition this summer.

This will mean each team playing the others twice giving six games per club.

The objective is to encourage competitive participation and help girls sections to consolidate and work towards dedicated leagues at all age groups.

Mulbarton CC intends to run another girls' day as part of its Tenth Annual Carnival on Tuesday August 24th - format to be decided.

Record number of clubs registered for 2010

With nearly five months still to go until the start of the season, there has been a record number of clubs preregistering their interest for the coming year.

Previous worries in some quarters that the new league would dilute participation in other competitions have proved groundless; the number of clubs and schools fielding youth sides in all forms of the game has continued to rise, proving that additional opportunities further increase involvement in our summer game.

It is hoped that the league provision on offer for girls only teams this summer, both from this competition and that of The Lady Taverners, run by The Norfolk Cricket Board, will provide an attractive incentive for the increasing number of girls taking up the game.

Don't forget that the league will be welcoming girls as part of the hard ball competitions where they may play two years below their age.

The following clubs have expressed an interest in competing in the coming summer's competitions and while this does not confirm participation, it is a healthy sign for this season's cricket.

U11: Bunwell, Garboldisham, Great Ellingham, Great Melton, Hethersett & Tas Valley, Mulbarton, Rocklands and Topcroft.

U13: Belton, Bunwell, Cringleford Lodge, Garboldisham, Great Ellingham, Great Melton, Hethersett & Tas Valley, Mulbarton, Rocklands and Saxlingham.

U15: Belton, Garboldisham, Great Ellingham, Great Melton, Hethersett & Tas Valley, Hardingham, Mulbarton, Rocklands and Saxlingham.

U17: Bunwell, Diss, Garboldisham, Hardingham, Mulbarton and Old Buckenham.

U13 Girls: Garboldisham, Mulbarton, Old Buckenham.

There is still plenty of time to register if you wish to be considered for next season with the closing date not until March.

No changes after 2009 League Consultation

All teams who took part in the third summer of The South Norfolk Community League have completed their evaluation of the season.

This year the clubs were generally happy with all elements of the competition. The main proposal for consideration was the introduction of a retirement limit for batsmen. Although some managers felt that games could too easily be dominated by one or two players, others welcomed the opportunity for their young batsmen to build a large total.

In the end, a substantial majority voted to keep the rule as it is - i.e. with no retirement. In one sided games it should be noted that coaches can voluntarily retire batsmen to give more of their team a chance; the not out batsman returning should all other wickets be lost.

Other matters occupying managers were the lack of scorers for some games, the way in which the law regarding wides was interpreted and the situation relating to no result games.

Clubs are expected to provide an umpire and scorer for every game and should agree before the match their interpretation of wides; consistency is important to ensure fairness throughout the fixture.

There is never going to be an absolutely perfect system regarding the resolution of no result games but the committee and managers felt that the present system is as fair as possible.

All clubs should be congratulated on their hard work in achieving another successful season for the league.

New Rules for girls participation in leagues

The South Norfolk community League will be introducing a new section for girls in 2010. This will be an eight a side Under 13 softball competition designed to encourage increased participation in the game.

An increasing number of girls though have moved on to the hard ball game, and while development groups can often raise a team, most clubs are not yet in the position to field a side of their own.

With this in mind, in 2010, the league will be allowing girls to play in the hardball games at two years below their age. Full details of age limits appear here

November 10th 2009

 New U13 Girl's League set for 2010

To provide competition opportunities for the increasing number of girls playing the game in Norfolk the league is to introduce a girls only section in 2010. Although the rules have been changed to allow their inclusion in the other leagues two years below their age, it is accepted that many are not yet ready for the hardball format.

Unlike the other leagues, this will feature softball games in a pairs format over sixteen overs. Full rules can be seen here.

It is envisaged that the league will include a maximum of six sides and that each team will only play the others once. The competition would start at the end of May and run throughout the summer term and finishing at the end of July.

To register your interest for this competition, without commitment, and to receive regular updates please complete the form on our contact us page.

Congratulations to the cricketers who won the best batting and bowling trophies for their age groups.

Garboldisham make it three out of four

Congratulations to Garboldisham who added the U17 and U13 league titles to the U11 trophy already secured earlier in the month.

In a close U17 competition, Hardingham, who won all four of their games, narrowly lost out when Ellingham were unable to fulfil their fixture against Garboldisham and the ten points were enough for them to scrape home by the narrowest margin.

There have been some impressive scores and tightly contested games, including a tie, in this league and it is hoped that the age group will become a permanent addition to the competition.

At U13 level, having finished all of their games first, Garboldisham's total looked well short of what was required with Tas Valley, Belton and particularly Rocklands all looking set to overhaul their modest points total, but all struggled in their final games with their challenges falling away leaving Garboldisham the U13 champions with 67 points.

 U15 Garboldisham finish in style

An emphatic victory for Garboldisham against a Hardingham side weakened by lads away on their hols.

Garby opener and captain Charlie Horn was quickly knocking the ball into every available gap and he clocked up 66 runs before being bowled by a lovely ball from Harrington. And once Garby's no. 3, Jack Yallop had got his eye in, there was no stopping him as he played some cracking textbook shots before being bowled on the very last ball of the innings by S. Hastings. Yallop finished on 69 to leave Garboldisham on 172 for 3.

In reply, Hardingham were rocked by the loss of early wickets as Harry Yallop bowled T. Harwood out off his first ball and then Joe Paul took out B Falcon with a thundering yorker that sent the stumps flying in all directions. Hardingham opener, B Scott batted on bravely before going for 25 to a slower ball from Garby's Ben Branfield that was caught by Ben Tippett. Clayton Merriman, hobbling from a skateboard injury, bowled the final over and took the fourth Hardingham wicket and the visitors finished on 89 for 4, 83 runs short.

Another win for Garboldisham that should leave them second in the table after a defeat to Great Melton earlier in the season.

U13 Last gasp win for Mulbarton

Without a win in their league season, Mulbarton U13s headed west for their final match of the competition; a bottom of the table clash with Gt.Ellingham.

Winning the toss and opting for first use of a well worn strip, Mulbarton started brightly with a quick fire innings from Pennington (9), supported by Rhatigan (11), before James Whitlock (39) produced his best performance of the summer featuring some beautiful punched drives. Well supported by Samson (26no), this pair put on 57 for the third wicket and added 47 off the last five overs with some controlled stroke play and quick running. For the first time this summer the team mustered three figures, finishing on 116 off their sixteen overs.

Only Perry (27) offered any resistance in reply and it was soon clear long before his dismissal that the target was far beyond Ellingham’s reach. Good bowling from James Whitlock, Samson and Morton, along with a couple of run outs and two good catches saw the home side bowled out for 47 in the final over.

U13 - Belton shake up Rocklands

Belton U 13's entertained Rocklands at the Common on Sunday morning and renewed their challenge for the South Norfolk Community League title with an emphatic win.

Belton captain, Romesh Tirimanna wisely decided to give his bowlers first use of the ball after winning the toss and was soon rewarded when S. Hichcliffe was run out for only two and A. Codling was caught by Andrew Page from the bowling of George Savoury for only 3.  At 19 for two Rocklands were in need of a base to mount a challenge and they found it in J. Baker (26) and T, Bart (23).  Ben Wood accounted for Bart, bowled, to slow the run rate and steady bowling from Tirimanna (3 overs for 6 runs) and Savoury (3 overs 1 for 14) ensured that the runs were accumulated slowly.  Rocklands finished on 101 for 3 from their 16 overs.

In reply, Romesh Tirimanna and Steven Gopaul found the pitch and the bowling to their liking as they compiled an unbeaten partnership of 104 from just 12.3 overs.

 Garboldisham U11s rampant at Bunwell

Bunwell were the unfortunate opponents against a rampant Garboldisham U11 side who scored an awesome 213; more than 13 runs an over. Both openers Matthew Branfield and Blake Ingram retired on unbeaten half centuries before the home side were bowled out for 47.

This is the largest total ever for an SNCL match and illustrates just how many runs U11s can score when freed from the restrictions of the pairs format.

Garboldisham look well set at the top of the U11 table but both Melton and Rocklands can overhaul them with the right results.

An entertaining game played in good spirit by both sides.

 U15 Mulbarton v Hardingham

Bad day at the office

There was a hint that it might not be Mulbarton’s day when their first over to Hardingham went for nine runs, five of those wides. Having won the toss and put the visitors into bat Mulbarton struggled to exercise any control with the ball, and apart from an excellent spell by Bradley, adopting the novel tactic of bowling straight and full, the bowling was universally dismal.

With quick running and lethargic fielding from the home side, Hardingham kept the scoreboard moving. Putting on 77 for the first wicket they never looked troubled and when J.Scott (43) was bowled by Culling, there were still six overs left. The improving George finally had B.Scott (44) stumped off Bradley before the innings ended on 119.

In reply, there was no real sense of urgency from the openers and they were quickly slipping behind the rate. Belatedly sensing the need to hustle on they chose the wrong runs at the wrong time, with the team suffering three run outs. No one looked like posting a decent score apart from George (12), who looked dangerous before being run out. That Mulbarton finally managed 85 was more a testament to the 41 extras gifted by Hardingham’s part time bowlers rather than any finesse with the bat. With just 44 in scoring strokes, this was a disappointing performance from a team capable of so much more.

 U17 Old Buckenham v Gt.Ellingham

OLD Buckenham secured all 16 points in their first South Norfolk U17 Community League match against Great Ellingham who were put into bat and were always on the defensive.

Captain Daniel Skipper caught A Wharton off Duncan Osborne for seven.

After seeing off both opening bowlers, Great Ellingham at 26-1 off six overs looked well placed but the introduction of spinners Joe Lewis (1-7) and Kieran Brown (2-13) quickly changed the game.

Brown bowled Hawkins (13) and Lewis had Glover stumped by Ryan Thompson for nine. When Skipper caught Potter off Brown for four, it was left to Josh Downes and Jon Walton to concede just 10 runs off the last four overs.

Old Buckenham, in reply, went off at 10 runs an over which they maintained to reach the required 57 runs in just 31 balls. Daniel Skipper led the way with 30 not out, including a huge six on to the pavilion roof whilst Ryan Thompson (13 not out) kept him company.

U15 Sharma on top form again for Melton

Vivek Sharma scored 71 in just 8 overs after Ellingham's K.Snowling had taken 3 wickets in an over to see Melton slump from 35-0 to 36-3.

With the score at 120-3, Sharma retired to give some of the other lads the opportunity to bat. Tom Smith scored 16 not out.  Brendon scored a good unbeaten 32 for Ellingham who never looked likely to overhaul Melton's 135-5.

Corey Connolly (3-0-9-2) and Sam Rock (3-1-12-2) were the pick of Melton's bowlers.

 U15 Garboldisham v Gt.Melton

Heroic half century from Tippett

Gt Melton batted first and after an intial slow start, moved up a couple of gears and were grabbing runs at every opportunity. Fine batting from G Ducker (46) and R. Brooker (25 n.o.) left Gt Melton with a strong total of 121 for 2.

Garboldisham captain and opener, Ben Tippett, batted bravely throughout the Garboldisham innings in an effort to chase down the Gt Melton score and he finished on 52 not out to leave Garbie on 99 for 6 – 22 runs short.

An entertaining game played at a fast and furious pace by two of the stronger sides in this league.

 U15 Bunwell v Gt.Melton

Record breaking total sinks Bunwell

Four early wickets by Fergus Spink had Melton struggling at 30-4 but Vivek Sharma, who was dropped before he had scored 30, launched an explosive attack on the Bunwell bowlers hitting 6 sixes and 16 fours in 125 not out, made in 11 overs. He was well-supported by tailenders Tom Smith, Daniel Hayward and Sam Rock as Melton totalled 173-6.

Spink then batted well in reply, hitting an unbeaten 61 in Bunwell's 117-6 but Melton's total always looked well out of reach.  Sharma completed a good all-round display with a one-handed catch and 2 wickets.

 U15 Mulbarton v Garboldisham

Ben Wilford

Ben Wilford
of Mulbarton CC

Mulbarton rue missed chances in classic encounter

Put into bat by Mulbarton, Garboldisham started brightly, their total boosted by extras (29) and four dropped catches. The introduction of Wilford produced another classic bowling performance (3 for 7) accounting for Tippett (11), Yallop (12) and Lamb (0), while Gibbins bowled the dangerous Seaman (21). But Garboldisham are a cohesive and determined team that took advantage of the home side’s generosity, and a late order assault by Grimwood (17), combined with tight running between the wickets boosted the score to 30 beyond what it should have been, finishing on 97.

Mulbarton’s reply started brightly with Gibbins and Button putting on 33 by the fifth over before Gibbins (21) was caught poking an easy catch to mid wicket and Button was clean bowled (14) by Tippett. After the departure of these two, despite the best efforts of George (25no) and Wilford (9), the innings was becalmed by controlled bowling from the visitors and the rate slackened with just 17 coming from the next five overs. As the match slipped away the big hitting George finally broke free and the board stated moving again, but after Wilford’s departure none of his partners was able to hang around, and  Mulbarton needing seven to win with one wicket remaining off the final over, managed just four, leaving them a frustrating three runs short of their target.

 Thrilling start to U17 league

In an exciting game at Garboldisham, both teams finished on 114 to tie the first ever U17 league fixture.

For the second year running Hardingham needed one to win from the last ball but the batsman was run out trying to scramble a bye.

This is only the second tied game in the short history of the competition and both have involved these two teams, the other coming in the U15 league last year.

 U13 Mulbarton v Garboldisham

Heavy overnight rain had softened the ground and with the air still damp, it was not a toss to lose. But Mulbarton did and Garboldisham sensibly chose to bowl.

In this same fixture last season, the Mulbarton U13s were bowled out for 23 in less than 10 overs, setting a new record for the lowest club total. At 17 for 3 they looked perilously close to repeating this performance with Holden (0), Pennington (3) and James Whitlock (5) all sent packing before the end of the sixth over, courtesy some accurate bowling and top catching by the visitors. But debutant Bartholomew (10) and Jonny Whitlock (12) put together a decent partnership of 30 to give the score some respectability, with the team finishing on 59 all out in the penultimate over.

This was rather a slender total to defend and the visitors set about the task in style, pillaging 20 runs from the first three overs despite an excellent spell from James Whitlock and Samson. A corking catch by Pennington removed the dangerous looking Tippet (12) and from then the rate slowed. Tight fielding and an astonishing reaction catch from Holden helped keep the wickets falling and while Garboldisham made rather heavy weather in chasing down such a modest target, in the end they managed it comfortably, led by Branfield (22no) with 19 balls to spare.

Another twenty runs and this would have been a classic encounter, but 59 was never going to be enough against a team of this calibre. This was an excellent team effort though with all of the boys encouraging each other and maximising their potential during this absorbing and entertaining fixture, watched by a large and appreciative crowd.

 U15 Gt.Ellingham v Mulbarton

Winning the toss, Mulbarton chose to field first, starting the match in light rain. Good opening spells by Button, Everett and Bradley pinned the home side down. Only Ledeboer (39) really troubled the scorers with a decent knock while his partners came and went at the other end, and when Wilford removed him as part of his excellent spell of 3 for 11, the innings quickly collapsed to 71 all out.

Despite Ellingham bowling and fielding tenaciously, Gibbins (24no) and Button (25no) put together an unbroken partnership of 72 to win the match by 7 wickets.

First ever U11 game goes Melton's way

Bunwell U11 played their first ever game of cricket against Gt Melton this evening, and posted a competitive batting score of 90 for 6. Tom Wagg top scored with 38 runs.

Despite taking 3 Gt Melton wickets, Bunwell found defending the total a challenge against a well organised Gt Melton side.

Both teams played the game in excellent spirit, and were well supported by family and friends.

 Belton broadside scuppers Mulbarton

Mulbarton U13s headed east to the seaside under leaden skies for their second league fixture against Belton who, winning the toss chose first use of another baked pitch, more reminiscent of late August than early June.

A bright opening spell by James Whitlock and Matthew Samson pitching the ball up set problems for the Belton openers, with Samson removing one of them clean bowled.

The rest of the attack though generally bowled too short and, on such a hard track, the ball simply sat up to be smacked away at will by the elegant Tirimana (67), well supported by his partner George (32no). These two put on 107 for the second wicket, leaving Mulbarton to chase 125. Of the other bowlers, only Sam Bartholomew troubled the strikers.

On Thursday Mulbarton made 92 and with a short boundary and fast outfield the stage was set for a thrilling run chase. But it proved more of a stagger with the visitors becalmed and managing only 11 runs off their first five overs. Wickets also fell alarmingly with several batsmen spending only the briefest of sojourns at the crease. Belton bowled well, especially Harris, 3 for 5, exploiting the hard pitch with full bowling that pinned the visitors down.

Only James Whiltlock (12), removed by an excellent catch, managed double figures and apart from a gutsy last wicket partnership of 22 by the Sams, Bartholomew and Morton, this was a disappointing batting performance, with Mulbarton not even able to bat out their full 16 overs, and finishing well short on 54 all out.

Belton played well and this was their first ever victory. With their attractive batting, accurate bowling and excellent team spirit, it will not be their last; a dark horse to watch in this league.

 Howard becomes first ever centurion

Joel Howard of Tas Valley CC

Joel Howard of Hethersett & Tas Valley became the first ever league centurion, scoring a stylish and chanceless 111 in the U13 match against Mulbarton. His big hitting innings comprised 21 fours and two sixes before he was finally removed by Morton in the thirteenth over.

Tas valley went on to finish their innings on 150 for 1, just 29 short of the all time record set by Garboldisham last season. In reply Mulbarton batted sensibly in scoring 92 for 6 off their 16 overs, to secure a single well earned point.

U15 Title Holders make cracking start

Garbie were sent in to bat on a lively looking wicket. Charlie Horn and Ben Tippett immediately had the scoreboard ticking over with some quick singles and Tippett was soon hitting some crunching boundaries through point and over mid wicket and Horn joined in with some beautiful strokes. Gt Ellingham bowler J Lake eventually trapped Tippet LBW for 42 and Horn was bowled by K Snowdon for 41. Garbie's 3 and 4, Joe Seaman and Pete Gray added 14 and 13 to leave Garboldisham on 129 for 2 after the 16 overs.

Ellingham went in to bat and looked very strong, running well between the wickets and hitting boundaries when they could. Despite a good start B ledebour miscued a shot and was cuaght by Tippett for 15 off the bowling of Harry Yallop. In the same over J Clarke was bowled for a duck. The other Ellingham opener, J Lake was caught by Horn from a ball from Jack Yallop.
Garbie all rounder Joe Seaman came on to bowl and took three wickets and Ben Tippett cleaned up with an excellent caught and bowled to see Gt Ellingham all out for 43 runs.

A good, solid start for U15 league title holders, Garboldisham.

Melton notch up first victory in 2009

A 2nd wicket partnership of 76 between Chris Greenslade (38 not out) and Adam Osborne (24) enabled Melton to total 95-2.  J.Lake was Ellingham's most successful bowler with 3-0-11-1.  E.Perry scored 10 and W.Watling 8 in Ellingham's 73 all out but 'extras' top-scored with 44, including 18 in wides and 16 in no balls!  Michael Farmer (2.5-0-7-2) and Stuart Wilson (2-1-2-1) were not responsible for any of them, however.
